My 77 CJ5 has the gas tank filler under the right taillight, and no matter where I fill up when I put the "gas gun" in the hole It has to be at a 90 degree angle and I have to focus really hard to barely squeeze the trigger, If I don't it over flows and pours onto the ground, which is pretty much un avoidable ever since I got this Jeep. I had been putting up with it as the norm. Until a lady filling up at the pump next to me started freaking out and telling me how unsafe it was, Im not to worried as much as annoyed. does any one else have or have had this problem in the past is there a fix is this the normal? (when I fill up the puddle is only about 4 inches round) Its a 15 gal tank and it does it the moment I start filling empty or full almost like its ricocheting of the filler hose inside. this is my jeep...

Try replacing both fill hoses. You have two on the gas fill unit. One is a vent so air can escape while you fill maybe it is clogged or damaged somehow.

I have to fill mine really slow. But it doesnt overflow

I have an after market tank and replaced fill hose and vent hose, and still have to fill slowly. It doesn't over flow though. I agree with above, check and maybe replace the fill and vent line.

try turning the handle up to the right as far as you can. This seems to help me. It is still a PITA.

FYI: the fill hose for a 77 is a bit difficult to find or it was when I replaced the tank. before removing yours I would suggest you find a replacement. I would say be careful removing the original but if it is like mine it was too brittle to save.

I know this is an old thread, but I'm at my wits end. I have a 77 CJ7 with the same issues mentioned above. If anyone has a solution for this overflow on fill up I would greatly appreciate it. As mentioned in the first post, my jeep also overflows when you attempt to fill it up regardless of being full or empty.

Try removing the unleaded restrictor. Some times the flapper can be a problem. They used to be a requirement, but since leaded fuel is impossible to find the requirement to have them in place has been relaxed, at least here in Arizona. It sounds like you are not getting past the spring loaded flapper and you are relying on the drain which is VERY slow.

His problem is definitely in the first 6" or so inches. I suppose there might be a BIG ol' constriction in the inlet pipe, but it would have to be a BIG constriction. I almost bet money its the unleaded restrictor/flapper.

Just the nature of the beast, I guess. My '76 has also always done it. I replaced the tank and hoses many years ago and that did nothing to eliminate the issue. I think the gasoline provider technology has done more to create the situation than anything. AMC technology had a hard time keeping up with the EPA regs when they were still in business. All the old school Jeep equipment and parts are really out of the tech loop now. I have the same issue filling up my diesel truck at some gasoline vendor locations (can't call them "stations" anymore). I just accepted that it would always be that way and keep a hand on the squeeze lever until it's full. Pretty much too paranoid to not hang onto the dispenser handle anyway; had it fall out of the hole too many times while gas was flowing!

I think it is the different position of the vent line, because from 78 you do not have the problem.

For comparison the two different vent hoses (till 77 and from 78 on):

For the newer, the vent hose goes directly into the filler neck...
