'85 CJ-7, 258/4.2L 6cyl. Bought new in 1985. Full cage, Warn 8274 winch, Ford 9" rear, front/rear Detroit Lockers w/4:88 R&P. T-5 tranny and 4:1 t'case. 33X12.50-15 BFG/AT, MSD ign, on board air---
Might help for us to know what carb you have.
Have you put a wrench to ALL manifold and carb base bolts/nuts?
Make sure you have no loose fitting vacuum lines.

Check the manifold bolts first before you go down the rabbit hole. I had a similar issue and if I done that up front if would have saved me weeks of frustration. I had one bolt a 1/4 turn loose that fixed the problem after wracking my brain and switching out a bunch of parts.
It could be as simple as the butterfly in the throat of the carb making the noise. Have you tried adjusting the idle screw up or down to see if the sound goes away?

Trans: T4, 4 spd
Xfer: Dana 300
Front Dif: Stock Dana (I believe)
Rear Dif: Stock AMC
If you have the non-electric BBD, then it’s probably just the site going through. If it is, and you slow it down and it idles too low, check your timing. It may be retarded due to wear on parts. Set the idle timing (8 degrees) and then readjust the idle.
