I have an 83 CJ7 with the AMC 258 i6 / 4.2l AMC 258 i6 / 4.2l engine. at idle it runs fine and doesn't miss. but after about 5 min. of driving it will have a loss of power and then start missing then finally stall and not want to start back up. ive pulled the carb and by the looks i need a new one but is that the cause? if it is whats a good carb? cause ive read that the stock bbd carbs are garbage.

Your problem could be from a bad fuel pump, testing it is another issue. Using a gauge probably costs as much as a new pump. Turning the engine over while watching gas flow into a bucket can be dangerous. A BBD can be rebuilt, I would recommend a professional rebuilder, as it worked for me. The BBD would be required if you need a smog check. A fuel injection conversion is something to consider.

Another member here posted a thread about having problems with his Weber carb, so I told him how I converted my 86CJ-7 (258ci) to a Motorcraft 2150 carb. It will eliminate your issues, give you better starting, running, power and mileage (+2mpg for me), plus it's really easy to work on and find parts for. Also, the 2150 if it is properly setup, can pass smog tests. Below is the link for the guy I got my kit from, and the transaction was great, the install was very easy and the technical support was top notch. If I remember correctly, the new complete jetted carb kit including the adapter plate, breather, electric choke and all hardware was just over $300.

Hope this helps.....

I had similar issues i did replace my carb, and basically whole ignition system only to find out my gas tank that i bought new in 2002 was full of rust! it was clogging up the strainer on the bottom of the sending unit. if you let off the pedal when it starts to choke will it run a little longer than if you kept your foot on the pedal? P.S. you probrobly know this but with the addition of ethanol to our fuel there is water in your tank unless you use an additive. But when the water separates from the fuel the fuel sits on top of the water so the water is just sitting directly on the bottom of your tank. Best of luck my friend. Keep us updated.

I also had similar issues. When it won't start have you tried removing the gas cap? Mine fired right back up.
