I like the whether channel idea and this looks reasonably user friendly and it seems to have every whistle and bell I could ask for , if I ever figure out what they do.:D

If you have some buds that know what there doing that's great, me I watched U tube video on how to use the SWR meter and worked fine.
Number one thing not to do that can kill is to key the mic with no antenna.:eek:

Don't worry about it,either coil it and leave under the dash , or run it under the door channel on the way back and leave a coil under the seat on either side....you won't have that much left over once you get to the rear.
 
If he puts it under the dash its around a great big electric field of wires ............. I prefer not to have my cb any where near my dash much less have the antenna crossing 9 billion wires making for a tuning nightmare the closer you can get the coils away from any electrical wiring the better.... just my 2 cents ......... and who the hell would want a coil of wire under there seat

Well under the dash may not be the best place, but truth is there is nothing under there that is creating RF waves, and a little 12v never effects coax, but under the seat on the floor I think is a great place to store it , in a Jeep put it wherever you feel comfortable.
 
more interesting questions: I am pretty much planning on putting it in the console between the seats but the FM will be there as well, no CD player is planned so that eliminates some really powerful magnets and not a lot of wiring.
 
As long as the power wires don't cross the antenna wires you should be fine .......... but make sure you get the longest whip antenna you can find so you can have fun going through the drive through

Sounds good , just keep in mind your mike and how your going to manage it on the trail inside the console. Also as I mentioned earlier a remote speaker may be also necessary. Good soldered grounds to everything, and I would bring a shielded wire with the outside grounded from your battery, that will kill any static in your 12 v feed.
 
I see them mounted up high were the rear veiw mirror is but this is not to practical with a CJ without at least a roll cage/front bar to mount to. In terms of trail use this would be a good spot though. I concidered it when mounting mine but chose under the dash, problem is you need to know the radio's controls without looking at them unless you want to stop evrey time (or find yourself somewere you don't want to be):oops:

Thanks. Under the dash would seem to be the best place. I am constantly having to hose the interior out so under the seat would be a terrible place. Mounted under the dash towards the center would probably be my only option.

we were talking about storing the excess coax, not the radio.
 
If any of you have a full cage / rollbar you could zip tie it up the rear angle bars, across the spreaders, and down the A pillar, to use up length.
But I have to ask, is 18' really necessary? I was perusing this subject last summer and there seems to be a faction out there who considers this old school thinking (I remember this as a child) and that modern research / improvement / study / whatever, has shown that it is no longer a "set in stone" requirement. It has seemed to have become another debate in some cb circles. I don't recall the details so I won't speculate as to the two trains of thought but has anyone looked into this issue? Is it old school thinking just still hanging around, dieing a slow death or is it still fact?
And if it is needed, what is the minimum diameter to coil excess cable (away from 12v lines)?
