1978 cj5 304 v8 renagade, 1977 cj7 304 v8 renagade, 1978 cj7 304 v8 renagade, now i have a 1979 cj7 304 v8 golden eagle.
I NEED HELP, I HAVE EVERYTHING WIRED BUT A FEW WIRES UNDER THE HOOD. I HAVE A 1979 CJ7 , AMC 304 V8 WITH A HEI DIST. I BOUGHT A CENTECH HARNESS FOR IT AND IT IS FINE EXCEPT 4 WIRES. I NEED HELP TO KNOW WHERE THEY GO. RED WIRE FOR ELECTRIC CHOKE, PURPLE WIRE SAYS START, BROWN WIRE SAYS OPT1, AND BLUE WIRE SAYS WATER. ANY HELP ON WHERE THEY HOOK UP TO WOULD BE APPRECIATED. ALL THESE ARE FOR THE ENGINE I ASSUME. THANX , JEFF:confused:

Since no one's answered any of your four questions, I'm going to offer something that might have a hint of being useful to you.

My Jeep has a new Painless Performance wiring harness. I looked at Centech, but I liked Painless' documentation better and that was my priority: the best instruction manual.

The electric choke wire came off the back of my Painless fuse box/panel.

Top row, far right.

I have no idea if this will help, but since you haven't gotten a response after a few hours, I wanted you to have something. If I've just added noise, you have my apology.

Thanks for your reply. I used the centech because all wires are labled and it plugs into my existing gauges and plugs. But these are the only four i have'nt figured out yet. Thanks for your help.:)

Have you called Centech?

Totally guessing here, but wouldn't "water" be for your temperature sending unit? Purple start wire goes to the starter relay. If I recall correctly, the starter relay is wired one wire to the + battery, one wire to the starter (mine was a metal bar), and the last one goes to the purple start wire. I have a different engine, but the same GM HEI system, and my purple wire went to the post closest to the engine. The Electric choke wire goes to the carburetor.

When I did my painless install, I called painless and they were very very helpful. I'd definitely give Centech a call if I were you.

Thanks for your help. That makes a lot of differance. I did not know where the water sending unit was. But now i do thanks. Not too brite on wiring. Jeff

Lemmme see...

Blue wire goes to electric temp sender for water temp. Should be a one-pole unit that screws into either your T-stat housing or block close to the front.

Red wire (on mine) goes to the + side of the choke coil on the carb.

Purple is the 'S' terminal on the solenoid.

Brown went to fused circuit for heater/radio (I recall this being an 'optional' circuit, that is , it's not always needed (hence OPT1).

Your HEI should only have one wire from the ignition. The tach will be yellow and the BATT will be either blue or red (mine is blue). The HEI unit will have an internal connector that is a 3-prong clip (Br/Rd/Bl) that connects to itself under the cap in front of the tach/BATT clips. At least that is how my Centech harness was arranged...shouldn't be too different on yours.

IF you have a meter or circuit tester, not a bad idea to test the wires for current before you connect all up. The blue one won't have current (until it gets signal from the live gauge), Brown will have current with IGN on, and probably with ACC on...if it has current with IGN off then it's meant for accessories like the radio. Red should ONLY be live with IGN on. Purple is ONLY live when the IGN key is turned to start (manual momentary on).
