Still working on my v8 for my chevy swap and am replacing the "mechanical" fuel pump. Did some research but didnt find alot of info. It has the 3 ports i imagine one is from the tank, one to carb, and one either back to tank or vent.I was just wondering if anyone could give me ideas or tell me what they did or didnt do for the fuel lines. Thanks again in advance !

The smaller 1/4" return outlet on the fuel filter should be placed at the 12:00 position. The return line goes into the top of the fuel tank next to the outlet hose on the later CJs.

Your 'fuel-pump' has 3 ports?
T'head has it 'rite'.
The OEM fuel filter has 3 fittings. The single fitting side is for incoming fuel from the pump. The side with 2 fittings-The center fitting goes to the carb. The smaller fitting near the edge(should be place'd at the 12 o'clock position)is the return line to the tank.

First of all can't thank you guys enough for your help you have been awesome ! And yes The fuel pump that is on the Chevy 350 that I have has three ports. I remember reading somewhere that some people had used a 2 port fuel pump on their 350 and I'm going to replace mine and want to make sure that I use the right one. As I look at the fuel pump on the side of the motor there is a quarter-inch port and a three eights inch port pointing at me and then on the backside there is a threaded place where it looks like the hard gas line used to be . So can I just replace that fuel pump with a new one? Or do I Need to buy something else thanks again!

3-port FP.
OK-scratch what I post'd then.
:chug:

So if I'm reading this right the single side of the pump will be connected to the line running down the passenger side rail of my jeep. Then does the three eights inch line go up to my carb and the smallest line goes to the vent on the tank? Which would be the line going down the driver side rail of my jeep correct?

I was 'talking' about the fuel filter-NOT the f'pump.

Can you post a pic of your pump?

I have worked on a lot of 350 chevys and have never seen a fuel pump like that. What year is that motor? I think you should be able to get one with just a inlet and a outlet and be good to go.

I believe it is off of a Chevy truck between 78 and 84 I researched the VIN a little bit after I purchased it over a year ago and it was saying 1980.When I took the fuel pump in to the local parts store he matched it to an 81 Camaro but I was told it came out of a Chevy truck between 78 and 84. I was hoping that somebody who knew somebody who knew somebody that was still running a carbureted 350 and what fuel pump they were using and how it's working for them......and how they installed it. I love Fridays in the garage !

I had a 78 chevy pu with a 350 and the pump had just a inlet and a outlet. This is all you need i would toss that one in the trash and get one like that.

I was doing some reading and saw that somewhere in that time vehicles with a manual Transmission had one and vehicles with an automatic Transmission have the other for what reason I have no idea why. So do I just The line coming down the driver side of the jeep which would be my return line ?

I would get a pump with just a inlet and a outlet and use the filter with the return port like LG talked about and you will be fine.

So just use my stock filter with the 2 port 350 pump and i should be good! thanks for the help !

The three port Chevy fuel pump was used on older model 350's to ensure that a constant supply of fuel went to the carb. :) During idle less fuel is needed. During full throttle all the fuel you can get was needed. So the fuel pump actually pumps more fuel than is needed all the time. Thus the reason for the third port - a return line. ;) This kept the pump from pushing to much fuel / pressure to the carb while at idle. You can replace this with a 2 port fuel pump (NAPA should have the correct interchange numbers), and eliminate the return line at the pump. :) I doubt that you'll ever get the 350 cranked up enough to starve it of fuel in a Jeep. Now if your building a rock bouncer? That's a different story.
