Getting ready to upgrade the front and rear bumper. I have a question regarding what appears to be the rear factory bumper(?). Is it advisable to remove this part and put the new bumper in its place? It appears to be bolted to the frame, but, you can not get to the nuts so hopefully it will loosen up. I attached a picture to make it easier to explain. It almost looks like part ot the frame? Really thin steel too.

It's hard to tell from your pic but it looks to me like that is the back of your frame not a bumper. Are there holes in it? If you have 4 holes on both sides by the frame it's the last crossmember of your frame.

Correct-that is what it is. So you mount the bumper over top of this?

I mounted by carrier over it, BE SURE if you are going with any weight to put (L) brackets on the inside and outside of the main frame to the cross member and bolt the new carrier to the (L) brackets. This is for support to hold the weight and keep the weight off the cross member.

Good advice-than you both. I plan to integrate a receiver in the bumper. I will plan to beef up the cross member accordingly!

es335, check out some of the bumpers and carriers that have been made and documented here on Jeep-CJ. There are some very informative threads and some pretty ingenious builds.
