CJ hard top with a YJ tailgate... Temporary

So, i found a YJ body and really like the swing gate. More importantly, i don't want to modify this near-flawless tub to attach a cj gate and fuel tank. I don't however, have a YJ hardtop... If i leave the spare tyre off for now, would a cj lift gate simply close overtop of the YJ swing gate? The CJ top would be on only until I found or could afford a YJ top...

Yeah, it'll work. I think you're going to have a gap to deal with though.

Here's a CJ with a factory hardtop (mine actually)

And here's a YJ with a factory hardtop

Notice how the CJ tailgate is flush with the tub? And that the CJ top closes over the tailgate. Now, notice that the YJ swingate is actually taller than the tub? And that the YJ hardtop has a groove built into it for the swingate to close into? That's where the problem is. You're going to have a gap there.

Don't know if you're interested, but I found this while I was looking. It's a conversion kit to turn a YJ swingate into to a drop down tailgate.

Yeah... I Just like the swing gate so much better... Wish I had all the stuff for a soft top... I'd just do that!
