CJ Radiator And Shroud Questions

85 with a AMC 258 i6 / 4.2l .

I have the jeep radiator that fits the recess in the support fully. by that I mean the fins and tank are flush to the mounting surface, and goes all the way to the front of the "notch' in the support.

I assumed this was a HD cooling radiator. I have seen other CJ's with the narrower radiator, in which there are less rows. The mounting bracket holes are around an inch forward of the tank and fins.

I ordered a HD cooling shroud, and it appears I got the "correct" one sent. This shroud won't work with my radiator.

This shroud is for the narrower core radiator. It has parts that go forward of the mounting surface on the rad support.

So do I have an HD radiator or is this the standard one?

I plan on using a 18 in plastic w/p mounted fan, so a shroud is fairly necessary. The 15 inch 4 blade was disappointing on the trails last summer, it couldn't pull enough air for the remote tranny cooler I have mounted in front of the radiator. I run a 727 tranny with a higher stall, so a remote cooler is necessary.

Would a narrower radiator be OK? what is it called? Are there more than two CJ capable radiators? I could only find some info on two.

Not sure how much you spent on the shroud but when I was looking they were like 100 bucks. Another 50 for the fan. I spent 300 and got a nice flex a lite electric fan setup. Just something to think about.

I just got a 3 row rad and the I actually had to space it back towards the engine "out" of the notch in the front clip. If I stuck it all the way forward where it contacted the front clip notch, there was still about a half inch in between the clip and rad mounting holes.

I have what looks like a stock rad. sitting behind my house. If you want to send me the measurements of yours I'll check them against mine.

Its a three row, 3 inches thick. center cap . It fits the rad support snug and flush in line with the support mount holes.

The HD shroud seems to need a smaller radiator? Ya, it was pretty pricey. Ya they sent the right part.

Not sure how a "heavy duty cooling" radiator would have less surface areas for cooling....

Nope on electric fans. I only have clearance for a "push fan", I run double pulley setups for OBA, pushes pulley closer to rad, I need a spacer for fan clearance it's to close for a fan clutch, and too close for a "pull fan". Custom" brackets for second "welder" alt. No room under hood for extra stuff. (like more relays, and temp controllers) Even relocated the horn to the brake booster area. Oh yeah, Remote winch solenoid and the cables stuffed under hood, too.

No spots for a sender left in the intake, (need a CTO for emissions) and i can't use a YJ water neck for a sensor because of my extra tensioner setups.
