Hi,

I'm getting a 1979 Jeep CJ5 ready for my 17 yr old nephew to drive and was hoping to get some general advice. I've gone through all the tie rod ends, ball joints, stock brakes, fluid services and other general maintenance things. The steering box has some play in it. I've attempted to tighten the gears and remove some of the slop, but it seems it has already been tightened down a pretty good bit. I'm looking to replace it with a unit from PSC. Is there any better brands for the money out there or maybe an upgrade by bolting on a unit from another make/model that is more heavy duty from the factory. Also direction as to where a good price on a PSC unit (or alternative) would be very helpful.

I am also looking into putting on a brake booster from a YJ. I've done a lot of research into this and it seems to work well and be really simple. Any other hints/tips for things that can be done to the steering, brakes, or anything else for safety would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks for the help,
Jim

FYI: It does not have a lift and is running 31" tires on some slightly offset steel wheels. Just looking to keep things factory or slightly better.

if your looking locally
theres Jody in rockmart ( lost his number that Cheapjeep gave me )
turner 4x4 i blue ridge ( i think )
Off road atlanta ( east point ) Walter may have what you need
but i went through your area 2 weeks ago (from Holly springs to Austell) and saw a salvage yard that had a YJ ( im thinking Floyd road )
sorry not much help today

Check that joint at the gear box end of your steering shaft. Mine was worn out and had a lot of play in the wheel.
