I have a 1980 CJ5 Jeep AMC 258 i6 / 4.2l Inline 6. My question is, can I pull the camshaft without taking the engine out of the jeep. The Clymer shop manual states the engine should be pulled. Any help would be appreciated.

Thanks,

Yes you can. I am just about (almost) finished doing this myself. You can remove the cam with the engine still in the engine bay.

You will need to remove the grill and the radiator to get the cam out of the engine, but that's a lot easier than removing the engine from the vehicle.

Elwood blues, so I'll start removing the grill and radiator tomorrow. I was afraid that the front cross beam would be in the way and that was why the shop manual states to pull the engine.

Thanks..

I had no issues with the cross beam, that's funny because my '78 FSM shows both engine removed and engine not removed cam shaft removal...

You shouldn't have any issues with leaving the engine installed.

You will need to remove the head to access the lifters.

How many miles on it? just out of curiousity.

I want to say around 200,000 miles. But, I'll have to check when I get home. But, it was rebuilt 4 years ago when my cousin owned it. At the time he paid $2300 to have the work done. I have the receipt from the shop that did the work. But the cylinders look great and the pistons look very tight....
