CJ5 Frame & Tub Differences

I have what's supposed to be a 79 CJ5 , but like most older CJ's the last owner redid it with parts from various years. Being the VIN tag wasn't attached to the body when I bought it, I can't say for certain that the tub and/or windshield frame are indeed from a 79 and that poses a problem since I'm looking to purchase a new top for it.

So what are the noticeable and identifiable differences between the earlier (55-75) and later (76 and up) CJ5 tubs and windshield frames?

The major difference between the 1972-1975 and the 1976-1986 windshields is the earlier windshields stand straight up and down from the tub while the latter leans back. This effects the top fitment.

There should be a VIN tag in the engine compartment on the fire wall near the master brake cylinder if the one inside the tub is missing. The other location for the VIN is on the frame; it should be stamped on top of the frame at the passenger side rear wheel. If you can find any of these and decode it you may shed some light on things.

The info on the "Big" differences is really helpful but, I was wondering if some of the small accessories like the center consoles listed for a 76 would fit in a 75 or is that area of the tub (too) different?

Most of the parts and off road catalogs start at '76 and very few list anything older. Hmm, maybe I should be looking for a '76 CJ5 to add to my collection!!Thanks //Bill
