I got a '78 CJ5 a few weeks ago. It's a good driver but I've been working through some minor issues.

One of those issues is the temp gauge that doesn't work. Grounding the wire on the sender for a second makes the gauge read full hot. But so far I have tried two different senders that give me no reading on the gauge. I tested the sender with an ohm meter and the values were nothing close to this guide http://4x4wire.com/jeep/tech/electrical/gauges/

Does anyone have a part number for a sender that actually works for this jeep?

Do you have any access to some resistors or better yet a variable one (potentiometer)? (kind of wish for Radio Shack again... :) )? A pot will allow you to test the gauge correctly. Are you using Teflon tape? The tape can impeded conductivity.

DigiKey has them. A trimmer pot would be best. https://www.digikey.com/en/products...-KPy8yizqQBsO0QBMBGsHAQPPyQICCkvACe3CqhchiWQA

I tested a 25 ohm resistor in place of the sender and the gauge read between a third and half.

No teflon tape, just pipe dope.

The second new sender was tested with an ohm meter and it read 350 ohms when I heated it to 200*. I'm pretty sure it's just not the right part, but it what their book shows.

Well just to wrap this up I got one that sort of works. Standard TS37.

The resistance is fairly close to what it's supposed to be. My guage might not be perfect either. The stud on top of the sender is smaller than it's supposed to be. Makes the connector a little loose.

To make the guage read correctly at operating temp I added a 68 ohm resistor in parallel to the sender. Doesn't seem to affect it much when cold. It's a little bit hackish but I didn't modify any factory wiring so it can be put back if a good sender can be found. Most importantly my guage is working.
