Cj6 with bad frame

Cj6 with bad frame
My Father hauled Automobiles, GM's to be exact, for +25 years. For ten of those years he drove a truck (tractor) that had been in a bad accident when it was for all practical purposes a new truck. After repairs you would be amazed at the amount of shimming they used to make everything "think" the frame was square. Dad loved that truck, the straightest crooked truck in the state of New York.

I'm lovin' your method of straightening the frame. It seems very Australian to me. Got a problem, work out a solution. What does the body look like? How did it get such a nasty looking tweak with or without body damage.

Glad to see that you tried the old chain and hydraulic jack method, and that it worked out for you. I still can't see why a body shop would not do this for you.
I made a tool out of ordinary items to measure a frame's dimensions, but looks like you won't be needing it. I guess that I will post it in the tools section instead.
Job well done! Enjoy your Christmas, and think of those of us here in the northern US that are not driving on a sunny beach, but instead bracing for the inevitable snow and sub zero weather! :(

Looks like there's still a bit of an bend down by the middle body mount, where your brace attaches to the frame. Is it so localized that it doesn't really matter for over all performance? I see your measurements show a straight frame.

Yes mate still a small bent twist there I'm going to try a bit of heat there to move back around
Started boxing the frame today will post up a couple of pic's tonight of what I've done

I think boxing as much of that big long frame as you can would be a good thing to do.

Greeno, I agree with Hedge on a complete box job along with crossmembers where they would help. Make sure where water can get in it can get out to ease up on rust. I would think twisting thru the Australian Jungle can move things around. Why not add a few pics of it in your gallery?

I just got done putting a new front end under my '75 CJ5 . The over all job was easy enough. It was the fiddly parts that have proven to be troublesome. My original drum front ran just fine without wedge shims, the disk front need 4* to 6* shims to keep it on the road. I really like the 6* shims I used, but 4* might have done the job just fine. Working out the finer points of the disk brakes can be fun too. My '75 has swing pedals so there are many options, if yours has floor pedals your options might be Limited .

Did you keep your front carrier open or did you install a locker of some sort. I went with an eaton truetrack, a mechanical not clutch, Limited slip unit. I am very pleased with the results. No muss, no fuss she just gets the job done. If I were to do it again I'd put the same thing in the rear.

Very nice job! :chug: Maybe you should take it to the body shops that told you they couldn't straighten it with their expensive frame straighteners and show them what you did.:D

Very pretty. Glad you worked it out. Send us some pics as it comes together. From what you've already done should be a nice build.

Now would be the time to straighten up those holes and what appear to be dents in the rear cross member/bumper. It will make the job of attaching the rear body mounts easier later on.
