I recently purchased a '77 CJ7 jeep and I was curious if the windows on the doors are supposed to go all the way down? And, if they are, how do I achieve that??
I have an 84 CJ that I stripped and rebuilt the doors on last year. I'm thinking there are only a few things that could keep the windows from rolling all the way down:
First, you're going to have to pull your door panel cover, assuming you have one. (You might end up breaking the plastic clips but you can get replacements at ACE if need be) You can also take off the lock mechanism cover as well. This will expose 2 main openings so you can see what's going on.
1) There is a stop block inside the door that keeps the window from rolling too far down into the door frame and striking the metal bottom of the door. You can see the anchor of it on the exterior bottom of the door as well. Did that block come loose? Is there a foreign object on top of the block?
2) The window crank mechanism is damaged. You can pull this out pretty easily but you will need to pull the crank and disengage the window roller. I can't tell you how to fix this but you can buy a new one. You should also check the roller mechanism as well. Is it greased? Are there any foreign objects lodged in it? Are the screws in tight?
Another thought: Check out the bolts used to hold the interior door pull handles in place (see last pic). If those were changed out with longer ones, that could block the window from lowering.
3) The felt window guide inserts in the window and door frame are damaged and/or the exterior window wiper blade (not windshield, 2nd pic) is damaged or loose.
You need to pull them out and replace them.
4) I suppose the frame rails could be bent, but the door itself would be damaged in the process and most likely the window would have broken...
ANSWER: The regulators are swapped - Drivers/ passengers side - I just bought some doors that some yahoo actually did this and i just figured this out
So it basically mounts fine but flipe the mechanism upside down - which will effectively limit the travel downward (runs out of gear) and another way to look at it - it changes the angle of that bar that positions into the track at the bottom of the window - so it will fail out at 75%
here is a pic of 2 regulators on ebay (if it is still avail)
