hi, let me start by saying this is my 1st jeep. ive had it for two days, i went wheeling yesterday and now it idles low and stalls when i come to a stop with the clutch pushed in. and it seems to do it once it gets warm.
any ideas? its an I-6 with a 4 speed.

it has a brand new holly 2bbl on it, i was looking at it today and if i take the air filter off it wants to die. if i mess with the choke it seemed to run ok. i just got back a few seconds ago and it still wants to stall if the rpm's drop
i am going to try and up the idle as a temp fix but i woul like verry mutch to get this solved. thanks, Mic

If its brand new make sure all the adjustments are right my new carb was suppose to be set out of the box but that wasn't the case. Check ur timing and make sure you don't have any vacuum leaks.

:DI would suggest not stopping. Ok, that really isn't any help but I couldn't resist.

What is the idle set at now?

I would first check for vacuum leaks as mentioned especially after a new carb install.

After your certain there is no leaks I'd try the air fuel adjustment screws using a vacuum gauge. If it runs better with the choke on it could indicate a lean mixture.

Had the same issue but smelled gas while driving and had to rebuild the carb. Main problem was the needle and valve flooding.

By taking the air filter off you should be allowing the carb/engine to get more air; the fact that it then stalls or almost dies would suggest it is running lean. I've honestly never seen that happen before though.

Make sure your idle is set correctly. I usually shoot for around 800 but thats with a big cam.

There should be a small enrichment screw on the side of the carb. Run it all the way lean by turning it clockwise and count the turns so you know where you are at. Then back it out to where it sounds the smoothest.

I did not fix anything yet but it had a chance to sit for two days, i had to go to the store and it did not stall, thought it may be a fluke but drove it last night and still no stall? i dont know whats up but ill take it if it stays ok...

Ill be out in the woods in the next day or so. ill keep u posted.

I had this issue on my 86 CJ7 , it was the float setting in the carb, as most people stated, check all the carb setting and you will find the gremlin.

New carbs are not set right from the factory, how can they be, any given carb can fit on many different engines. Your carb should be installed by someone who knows what they are doing and that just might be you, but probably not. I've struggled with carb issues for hours, days and even months that took a carb. guy literally minutes to fix. Your CJ is clearly running too lean at idle, the idle screw is set to low, it could be an vacuum leak (check your hoses and most importantly your vacuum intake caps/plugs), a gasket leak, a miss adjusted float, a plugged idle jet (how's the crud in your gas tank?), a plugged fuel filter or a poorly performing fuel filter. There could be other problems, but I can't think of them right now, but I bet the problem is in one of the areas mentioned above. Your problem is frustrating, but ultimately the fix will be something minor.

Also, ck all of your manifold bolts/nuts to be sure they are TIGHT.
If you have tightened the fuel line fitting at the carb's bowl. You have change'd the float setting.
Make sure the return line fitting(smaller dia of the 2)on your fuel filter is at the 12 o'clock position.
