Throttle Down Kustoms jeep Hybrid bobbed frame. Future CJ8 build, Planning phase
Hi, I'm new here. HI lol:)

So here's what I'm planning. I am building a Hybrid CJ8 , This jeep is going to be built to be a go anywhere through anything ( mud, water, maybe some rocks ) and I'm only going to start this project with a TDK Hybrid bobbed frame so I'm open to any and all suggestions.

Pleas keep in mind I love water crossing so she's going to be sealed up tight!

For starters Drivetrain- OK I really like the idea of putting a stroked 4.0L in her witch is good because I can really keep the cost down that way lol I know I want to use a automatic Transmission maybe a AW4 or a 32RH (any other strong tranny ideas?). The Tcase maybe a Dana 300 or put the money into a atlas. axles Dana 60 rear and Dana 44 front with 4.88 gears on 35" tires, Lockers Eaton Elocker (unless someone gives me a better idea).

OK so for now I could use some feed back on what to use as a transmission and Transfer Case ?? I'm going to be buying a salvage XJ and TJ for parts depending on what way I go here.

Sorry if i'm all over the place with this lol
Thanks

700 R4 Yes......... has the lowest Auto 1st gear at 3.06 to1...........but with the 30% OD in 4th gear this maybe only the right Transmission if you are also going to drive it on the street..............other wise a 3-speed 350 works well............as far as the Dana 300 ? By the time you fix one of those up to be really strong...........your at the price of an ATLAS.........really no choice there!

How much stronger do you really need your Dana 300 to be?

With a slushbox and the fact that you don't have beg plans for rocks the Dana 300 is way more than you need. The auto will reduce shock loads and since most of your driving is on slippery surfaces such as wet things and dirt then you really have nothing to worry about. I say Dana 300.

Florida...............Sand, Bogs , MUD & maybe some rocks? Dana 60 and lockers on 35's and we all know the 35's quickly turn into 38's and 40's..........the last thing left to break is the Dana 300 .............
Yes the Auto will help some , but if your starting from scratch , you will first have to go buy a Dana-300 then add the normal up-graded parts like input and output shafts that are fine splinded , or like a J&B 4:1 Kit which will set you back about $1500 plus the price of the core & the shifter.

The Atlas has a MUCH LARGER GEAR SET , Shifts on the fly rather than having to Stop with the 300 , the gear choices are numerous along with better driveshaft clearance around the bulge on the right side of the 700r4 and there is really hardly a limit to tire size or Horsepower...............just saying if your starting from scratch..........the Atlas will be the last Transfer Case you ever buy at just a few hundred more bucks than the D-300 fixed up!

Had to make a new profile...password recovery was not working :(

I might just go with the atlas, If i do a 4.0L with a 700R4 I need a adapter and would need another adapter for the Dana 300 ( $600+ ) after building up the D300 and buying the adapter I might as well have just bought the atlas lol

Well looks like the atlas needs the same adapter as the Dana 300 lol same boat either way so what ever is cheaper lol

I just bought a new Atlas...........whatever way you want it configured is the way it's shipped............the only thing different is the way they pick-up the SpeedO which is in the TC tail shaft or if your were to use a 4L60E electronic version tranny then it gets more interesting.

Look around on Craigs List.............they do come available used.......as long as you can find the right ratio.........3.8 or 4.3 is the norm for a 700r4 with the 3.8 being more widely used do gear multiplication and lock-up converters and the ability for your brakes to stop it while in low gear........... More is still better but a larger disc brake package with larger diameter Rotors which also means a larger diameter wheel is called for in order to stop.
In either case with 35's on there a noticeable decrease in braking performance will be apparent.
