Hello,

I recently purchased a lower miles AMC 258 i6 / 4.2l from a 1983 CJ7 that was mated to a T-4 . I am looking to replace my engine, a AMC 258 i6 / 4.2l in a 79 CJ5 mated to a T-18 . Part numbers for both year numbers are different. I am thinking I need to buy a flywheel and clutch to match the 79, so the spline mates up with my Transmission . I am assuming any AMC 258 i6 / 4.2l flywheel will bolt to another AMC 258 i6 / 4.2l . Can anyone confirm or correct me? Thanks!
 
Your 83 flywheel will bolt up to the 79 engine with no problems.
 
Thanks caveman, then I assume the 79 flywheel will bolt to the 83 motor also?

I feel like I'm over thinking this one, but this is not an area I want to have to redo anything once the motor is in!
 
I would buy a new clutch kit to match your Transmission . Also have the flywheel resurfaced, check the pilot bushing it may need replacing as the input shafts may be different size.
 
What RiverSand said.The jeep 6 cylinder engine didn't change from the early 70s AMC 232 i6 (I think 72) to the last of the straight 6's in 2006 as far as the flywheel bolt pattern.
 
To pop out the bushing, pack it (fill it) with grease / or anything non compressible. Put a good fitting dowel in and hit the dowel with a hammer. Bang, it pops out.
 
Thanks for the replies. I plan to have the flywheel resurfaced and buy the OEM luk clutch that includes the appropriate pilot bushing. It also contains the alignment tool which had been concerned about.

Reading over Novak's site makes me a bit nervous as I assumed putting the Transmission and motor back together would be pretty simple. They get into a lot of measuring etc, but they are also doing conversions. Is that all really necessary assuming the clutch alignment tool works as it should?

The motor is on a stand right now. Besides the clutch/flywheel work, I am going as far as replacing thermostat, rear main seal, timing chain, oil pan gasket, ex/int gaskets, valve cover gasket, a little black paint, and then dropping in my jeep. Originally it was just gonna be the rear main and oil pan, but you guys know how that goes.

It could probably could use a rebuild but I am saving that for my original motor. If there is anything under 100 bucks that i should seriously consider doing please clue me in.. This just needs to get me through a few hunting seasons until I do a ground up rebuild.

I was surprised by this and didn't believe until I tried it - use bread - plain old cheap white bread. Easier to clean up than grease, and works great.

Remove crust, pack bread in and same dowel or socket backwards trick as grease.
 
Just a quick update to all who responded, my jeep is (almost) back in service. Motor runs and sounds great, clutch works, and fuel injection installed. Just need to get the proper linkage to start driving!!!
