Clutch pedal removal?

Hey gang,
I'm trying to replace the clutch master cylinder on by '86 CJ7 4cyl. The cotter pin in the shaft that connects the pedal to the master cylinder must've rusted in place, 'cuz as I tried removing it, it snapped, on both sides of the pin, so close that I can't get a vice grip on it.

Unless y'all know of an easier solution, I think I'll need to pull the clutch pedal and do some machine shop work to get the rusty cotter pin out. My problem is, I don't know how to pull it.

Any ideas?

Thanx!

-Sean

To get it down you will need to pull the wheel, remove the dash, drop the column and remove the brake and clutch assy.

Plan "a" would be to drive a flat blade screw driver, perhaps even a sharpened flat blade screw driver, under the washer at the end of the shaft in such a way as to shear off the end of the spring pin. Do this on both sides of the shaft. after the rod is off you may be able to force a suitable sized drill bit through the hole and force the broken pin out far enough to grab it with dykes or pliers.

If this fails, there is always plan “B”

I don't recall ever needing to remove the rod to remove the cylinder.
But I don't have a clutch cylinder only a brake cylinder.

Whatcha' need is a slim pin punch, the same diameter (or smaller) as the cotter. Using a small hammer, you can drive the cotter right out with it. BE CAREFUL not to break the pin punch - they're BRITTLE!

Or... use a Dremel with a little slim wheel to grind it off completely flush so you can take it out, haul it over to the bench, and use the pin punch THERE.
