Hi guys, replacing my AMC 304 in the cj. Im wondering what your opinions are on the best clutch to install while I'm at it. I'm from Washington state so it's snow country and I hunt regularly but really not a hardcore rock climber or anything like that. Thanks in advance

:)Northbound,

For the most part the Centerforce name probably has the better line of clutch & pressure plate components available & they offer three versions........there are a ton of others out there that are remanufactured and built off shore............but if you want something that you can install and forget use the Centerforce.............stay with the Organic linings and not the high friction metallic materials.
Don't forget to get your flywheel surfaced and put in a new throwout bearing. It would also be a good time to check your linkage and replace any worn parts.

Thank you Tarry99 & CJ....I will take your advice and go with the centerforce clutch, new pilot bearing, and throw out bearing...I appreciate you assistance in this matter. ...Wayne.

If you get the kit it will come with everything you need.

Let me echo tarry99 and what I said in a similar thread:

Centerforce
They make several clutches. Three of which would work good in a CJ:

Certerforce I - Although considered an OEM replacement this clutch is more stout and has better holding power than what the factory put in.

Centerforce II - This is a heavy duty clutch and will stand up to many years of abuse. Centerforce says this clutch is "ideal for off-road and towing applications"

Centerforce DualFriction - Although I would not recommend this for your jeep I am going to mention it anyway. This is an extreme duty clutch that is popular with the hot rod groups. It can hold up to a high performance engine or extreme off-roading where you would be worried about burning up a lesser clutch.

Since you have a AMC 304 that is close to stock I would recommend a Centerforce I or a Centerforce II.

Great information mtnwhlr and BusaDave99.. I thank you both...I pulled the Transmission and Transfer Case today, The throw out bearing was shot but most everything else looked ok, Tomorrow I'll break apart the Transmission from the Transfer Case so I can replace the pilot bushing...
I was wondering what fluid you guys are running in the Transmission and Transfer Case . Also I was going to replace the fluid in the differentials
I would appreciate any input you guys could give....Wayne

The Pilot bushing or bearing ( could be either) is in a cavity in the back of the crankshaft. No reason to remove the Transmission from the Transfer Case unless you have other service work to do.

You may need a special puller to change the Pilot.

As far as gear oil whatever the manufacture recommends for the climate your in. In most cases an 80w-90w gear oil.......If your rear ends have Positraction then and additive will also be necessary.

Tarry99,Ok I'm looking at the exploded view and the pilot bushing is indeed located in the crankshaft, I appreciate your info on that, so as far as the fluids are concerned any good brand will do so I'll see whats out there..Thanks..Wayne

You don,t need any fancy tools to pop out that bushing... :) a bit of grase and a piece of wood dowl or a bolt that fits the inner diameter snugly is all you need. Fill the bushing with grease and put the dowl in the bushing. Use a hammer to force the dowl into the bushing and through the magic of physics the grease displacement will pop that bushing right out of the crank.
