So this is the first clutch I am changing out. I have a couple of questions. To start off I had this thread going (http://www.jeep-cj.com/forums/f2/starter-noise-not-starting-10939/) and I came to the conclusion that I needed to change out the flywheel. I ordered a new flywheel and clutch assy, and got everything apart and found out that my engine is missing the alignment sleeves for the bell housing to the engine block, hence the bendix being off by a little.
1st Question: So is there a right way to put the clutch pad on?
2nd Question: Since I ordered a new flywheel and clutch assy, do I need to align the two in any specific manner?
3rd Question: Any other hints of advice or suggestions that I need to do while I have everything apart?

Thanks,
Gus

I believe u will start by putting flywheel on, then the pilot bushing in middle use alignment tool to get clutch componates all lined up ( yes i believe one side of clutch disc says flywheel side or something simular) and bolt pressure plate on thenbell housing and pivot fork with throwout bearing ( make sure the pivot fork ball is on there... Some grease should help it stick until you can get pressure on it)

Then slip trannyin.

Do not suck tranny up to bellhousing with bolts! should slide right in... Wont at first... Will piss u off... You'll want to... But dont! take your time and get everything together right first time...

make sure you clean the new flywheel good with some rubbing alcohol because they are shipped with oil on them so they dont rust. kit should come with a alignment tool as well.

Brake Kleen also works great to remove the oil from the flywheel and the pressure plate. I just put a new clutch assembly in my 66 CJ about two weeks ago. When you first try to get the Transmission in the hole it will Pi@@ you off turn the rear yoke a little until the shaft lines up with the clutch and it will go right in. :)

Did you say your aligment dowl pins are missing? These are important for propper clutch opperaton . Use lithium grease on splines and pilot bearing. Not much though

Yes 7D8CJ, the PO didn't put alignment sleeves in between the bell housing and the engine block. Lithium grease on splines and the pilot bearing got it. Also guys, how do I get the brass sleeve on the backside of the crank out?

Thanks,

Gus

The brass bushing/pilot bearing requires a puller to remove. A small slide hammer with a hook attachment usually works.

Thanks everyone for the help with the clutch. Just to let everyone know the alignment pins made a world of difference on the starting system. But at the same time, the missing of the alignment pins wore the pressure plate and the pilot bushing out badly. Glad this is over now. Thanks again for all the help!:notworthy::chug::notworthy:
