Ok , I went down to the car wash and washed off my CJ5 , 1957 Body, and went to leave when I was done, put the clutch in and then in gear, I let out on the clutch and in stayed in position, I had to kinda pry it to get it to release,. If I put in in a little bit , just enough to put the Transmission it gear it would release. with some coaxing. So what is it a bad master cylinder or a bad Slave cylinder. I don't think there is a return spring on the Hydraulic clutch? Your thoughts please. Thank you

Edit: missed all your profile info - disregard my earlier reply.

Do you know what mc or sc you are running? The sc could easily be stuck...

If you crack the hose to the sc and the to arm retracts then you know it the mc.

Could be a few things so Id have someone depress the pedal while you are under there watching.

I actually just put a hydraulic system on my 73 last week and there was a manufacturer defect that was leaving the MC piston depressed just a hair. My clutch still worked fine, but I wouldn't have freeplay. I ended up diagnosing the problem just like how CJ described. Once I cracked the bleeder, I could push the slave in by hand and get my freeplay.

I've also had a situation where my clutch was being depressed TOO FAR due to an aftermarket cable that was too short. After releasing the pedal, I would have to rev the engine occasionally to get the clutch to engage. The pedal would be loose during this. Never found out if the fork/TO bearing were getting hung up or if the diaphragm was being depressed so far it was stuck. I just replaced the cable and that was that.

Either way, you need to find out if when this occurs, the fork is still pushing down on the clutch and if so, is the slave holding it down or is the fork stuck on something inside the bell. If its the slave, then you have to diagnose the hydraulic system. If the fork is loose and the clutch is depressed, something is wrong with the pressure plate.

I would install a return spring, but the PP should have enough tension to return to the engaged position.

When you say coaxing, are you lifting up on the pedal or pumping it or what?
