I got ready to replace my gasket and found this. I have found no pictures on the internet that look similar. There are foam or rubber blocks and a wire glued in the goop someone used last. The blocks appear to be diverters for the defroster because there are none on the gasket. Shall I reuse the wire and blocks?

Not sure what the extra parts are for. That is the typical duct for the defrost for the later model years. The rubber seal that goes in between the windshield and the body should be enough to seal everything. Maybe the PO had a leak and added the parts to stop that.

:ww:

Agree with PB. That's not OEM.
Is that a wire at the bottom??

My CJ is set up just like that minus what looks like glue all over, with that wire support. and it is oem.

WOW-My '85 isn't, and it's all OEM.
Gotta love AMC.

Been along time since I looked at mine but I remember some wedges like that as well, must be to make up for poor body fitment

Maybe they were installed on a 'as-needed' deal if a line inspector said to do so.

My 84 is all original there and has the blocks minus the glue job. As with other things AMC did, there is some shoddy engineering. I don't think they were building them to last this long. The 2 things that **** me off the most are the no primer bare metal to metal places and where the track for the soft top is attached to the top of the windshield. Looks almost like a pneumatic hammer punch installed the screws

Thanks all! I'm going to try to save the blocks and wire in case I need them, and clean up the goop.

I ordered an aftermarket gasket which arrived yesterday. It was about 3" short, the lip on the outside of the windshield was thin and curled up, and it had no screw holes. I then talked to the Jeep dealer parts dept here. He told me their part is OEM and the part no. has never been superseded. I ordered one and it should be here tomorrow. The downside is it was a little over twice as much $$.

I'll report my findings when I compare.
