I have a bad crankshaft seal which is creating oil leakage on my 85 Jeep CJ7 ..

I'd like to replace the seal myself.

I have access to the damper remover / installer tool, although I am wonder how hard this process is for the newby mechanic such as myself.

Has anyone done this procedure before? .. and can tell me if I am better off having a pro tackle this, or is it easy enough to do it myself.

Any thoughts are appreciated.

the service manual does a pretty good job of describing this, read, study, see if you are comfortable with the job and go for it. the seal, technically, is to be replaced with a special driver that lines up on the end of the crank but the one I replaced was part of replacing the timing chain cover with a crack in it and I put it in with a regular seal driver and it worked OK. If you decide not to remove the cover you may be able to find a socket of a pipe that you can use to set the seal over the shaft.

Thanks for the advice. I did research the procedure. The only thing that worries me is stopping the crankshaft from turning when removing the damper.

Could I just put the Jeep into gear to stop this?

Also, Did you have the remove the radiator for working space?

yes and yes.

one other point, the seal doesn't ride on the crank, it rides on the damper.:D

Just an added note check your timing chain while your at it,I took my timing cover right off and replaced the chain and gears at the same time could save you having to redo the same job! ;)
