Cross member

I have a 1981 CJ5 When I got it home I noticed the rear crossmember by the shock mounts was removed.What reason would anyone have for removing the cross member? I plan to fabercate a new one. Any hints would be great . I planded on doing it with 3-16 thick material. I will break it at work and weld it in.

I'm assuming it's the rear cross member in front of the gas tank. Why? Well maybe it rusted out?


Maybe you could find a used one at a junk yard and weld it in. Shouldn't be hard to fabricate one.

Fabing one up is not a problem. Just can't figure out why they removed the cross member the only thing rusted on the jeep was the battery holder. I thought about junk yarding one but I know I can make a sweet one up at work. Only thing is it will not look oem but that is not to big a deal on something very few people will see anyway.
