crown gauge help please!!!

so last night I installed a replacement fuel gauge from crown, wrote down where i took every thing off from. went to start it.....nothing just cranks...
so I can in early today and found now w/ the pink wire and red wire connected to the fuel gauge it pops the 15 amp ignition fuse....once I pull those 2 wires off it stars fine? my gut was to just swap them but know its very easy to ruin the gauges...any ideas? Or anyone seen the same...sorry for such a newb type question?
