Hey all, this is my first post here. Mainly due to the fact that I can't find any information on this at all. I just bought a 79 CJ5 . It runs and drives but the tub is pretty shot. I basically bought it to swap it's 400+ horses into my CJ7 . Anyways, I got alot of parts with it, and two of them were a pair of CJ5 steel doors with the "crystal" knobs on them. The PO told me that they were only made for one single year and that they were worth a pretty penny. He claims $500 a knob, but I have a very hard time believing that. I also have a hard time believing they are crystal and not glass. Does anyone know what they are worth or have any info on their worth. I truly have no desire to keep them and would like to sell them even if they are not worth anything. Like I said, I bought the 5 for the motor and the rest of the jeep and parts are hopefully to be sold off to recoup a chunk of the change I just spent. Thanks all for any info on these.

Just what I've been looking for! do you have the chandelier/dome light too? LOL. Pics would help but sounds like you've been taken for a fool or you think we are?

Glass "hardware items" have been illegal since the late 1950's.

Try finding a "crystal" NOS shifter knob for reference.

okay.......hmmmm
can you post a pic of these Crystal knobs ?

I might have an explanation once i see the pic
and is there a home depot near you ?

some of the OLD houses here in the ATL area still have skeleton locks in them
which has a square "spindle connecting the knobs on each side of the door
which replacement knobs can be purchased at the local home depot

easy way to tell.....look on the neck of the knob to find a set screw....loosen and unscrew or slide off the knob then take to home depot lock aisle and see if matches "closely" to the antique replicas

now certain jeep lever handles have a square spindle as well

Well, here are the pics I tool yesterday.

Like I said, PO said a buddy of his told him, they were very rare and worth some dough. A buddy of mine said he had a set at one time and had just thought someone jambed a door knob in there. I truly don't know. but I know that 500/piece sure would go a long way in funding this CJ project of mine!!

now that is funny, hey I got some swamp land in florida to sell

OK first thing is that this is a CJ7 door and those knobs have nothing to do with jeep. I will not say that they may or may not have come over on the may flower but I don't think they will fall into the category of Jeep collectables. This may cause me to rethink the possibility of a 400+ HP 360 as well but that's just me.

Well, now that you point out that those are doors for a 7, that much you are correct on. I never even looked at them other than the knobs. Either way, I still have no interest in keeping them. As far as the 400+ hp, that much I can vouch for!! Well, at least in my opinion. No documents to prove it. PO said the 360 was built by a guy who never ran it, and supposedly it dynoed @ 465hp with a 1200 cfm carb. PO said it was just scary with that so went down to an 800, then a 750, and finally stayed with a 600. All I can say is that with the 600, I could get into a bad situation in a split second.

As far as the glass knobs go, I would love to see some other pictures of them. I can't say that I have ever noticed them elsewhere. And I will check later tonight to see if there is a set screw in those knobs anywhere.

How much swamp land are you trying to sell? =)

I've heard stories of that Jeep. It belonged to a Sudi prince. Did you find the solid gold shift knob?

X3

I, for one, am glad you are taking this in the spirit it is given. You may have bought stock in the diamond mine in Oklahoma but it will be interesting to see how this new motor works out. Personally I don't know what anyone would do with that many ponies in a CJ but, hey, whatever floats your boat.:D

I am sure there are web sites for antique house fixtures out there some place.:)

OH DEAR GOD

antique maybe but not with the jeep
the other thing......is it really glass or clear plastic?
if you cant widdle a piece off with your knife then you could take to an antique shop to see if they would buy them spindle and knob
then look for lever handles with the spindles

notice on each side of the knob there are holes ?
that more than likely was the mounting holes for a lever assembly

sorry for the bad news

If I were you I would stop quoting the PO, unless of course you are trying to be humorous. :D

I'm curious about the intent of the motor also. Is this going to be
a hot-rod, mudder, or for playing in the sand dunes.

I'll leave the door knob thing alone.:D

Xs 2 on both. :D

one of the more interesting threads I've seen here!!
I have 6 sets of these knobs and am thrilled to find out that they were upgrades and worth $ 500.
I would be willing to trade them for anything Jeep related from the mid 60's.

No REALLY, I would.

I had those same knobs om my 100yo house that I grew up in in NJ.

not to be an a** but, a 400+ hp engine would starve for fuel and run like :dung: with a 600 cfm carb. a 250 hp crate in a verry light CJ7 will rip for sure.
low weight moderate Hp vehicle, would feel like 400 hp. id go get it on a dyno
and find out for sure. maby get some cash back, it sounds like you might have been taken for a ride. good luck.:us:

I just put the door knobs from my bathroom on Ebay, I will finally be able to buy those engine swap parts. :D
1200CFM on a 360, um yeah right.

Before this gets out of hand I believe what people are trying to say is , " We know what the previous owner told you you have". Now its probably best you post some pics and let us tell you what you really have.

You were lied to atleast once and I suspect more than that. Knowing more about what you have will only help you in the long run. :)
