Cummins R2.8 Build

Cummins R2.8 Build
The only issue I have ever seen first hand is a couple of broken input shafts, from a heavy right foot.
The folks I know that run them. Seem very pleased with'em.

The Cummings diesel puts out 385 ft. lbs. torque at 1800 rpm. So that would mean some twist in the engine mounting. The CJ clutch bell crank is connected to the frame from the engine so excessive twisting will pull it apart. I have seen guys use Jeep Wrangler hydraulic clutch linkage work well and a improved motor mount setup would help also. That what I would think.

The '80 CJ5 with the GM 2.5 also had a hydraulic clutch linkage setup.

How is the progress on your engine swap???

I have ordered and received most of the parts I'll need, AX-15, adapter plates and bell housing, clocking ring to fit to the Dana 300 , I'm putting together some unrelated stuff, new gauges and switches etc for the dash, I still need to source the intercooler and electric fan to go with it. Work starts on rip out next Monday, I'll be selling the AMC 258 i6 / 4.2l , T-5 , Carter Carb and all the California compliant smog equipment (just passed smog test).

:agree:

The OP was last 'on', July 9. :dunno:

It has been 3 months since the last update to this thread. How did the install turn out? Any good or bad news??

It's been slow going but the engine is in and I have been driving it around. First impressions: Wow! This engine is a great fit to the CJ, plenty of power and it seems to go forever on a tank of gas.

I am still working out some kinks, for instance the turbo puts out between 24 to 27 psi so my air fittings have to be upgraded so they don't leak. Hearing the turbo spin up and then leak past does sound cool though.

We had to move the Transfer Case back about 3 inches to fit the new bell housing and Transmission (AX-15 replacing the T-5 ). That gave me some grief on drive shaft angles, I'm lifted about 5"s so the vibration is not good. Working that issue now. While this engine is great it is loud. I am not sure how much is vibration from the drive shaft but conversation at speed is a challenge. Bring on the questions and I'll try to answer.

Man I would love to see any pics you have, so the AX15 is that much longer than the T-5 ?

I have some pictures and videos posted over at Facebook, a group called "Cummins R2.8 Crate Swap And Discuss"

Glad to here you got it in and going. I wish I could do the same, but it will have to wait for a long while.

Did you take it to the smog station yet??? Any problems with that?

Glad to hear the project is moving along! As for the AX15 and driveline angles, I'm sure a double cardan rear shaft properly set up will take care of the vibrations. The AX15/Dana 300 is shorter than an AX15/NP231 that the YJs and TJs run, and they have the same wheelbase as a '7.

Many of us are not on FB, and Ill bet it's a 'closed group' also.

I'm barely on Facebook myself. Just posted something over there and they deleted it or pushed it off in Facebook la la land. I was just wondering how anybody could loose 120 something billion dollars on a free website. How do they make money, especially when they swear that they don't sell our information? ...... It was an honest question, evidently the sensors didn't think so.

I saw your pics on the page, nice work but it sure looks like it’s a tight fit once everything is in there

Not a closed group, just a bunch of people doing the builds and of course the Cummins people.

Incorrect-Clearly states 'closed group' in upper left corner under name.
I pasted the title from your earlier post #49.
