Custom Bumpers

Not sure if anyone wants to give away their "secrets", But I'm wanting to build new bumpers for my CJ7 and was thinking that there might be some great guys out there with some really great ideas and pics on what they did or didn't do, or maybe even what the wished they had done or hadn't done. Thanks in advance for any advice.

The first thing I would do is go to a local metal shop and have them cut you anchor points for shackles. make them long enough to bolt to the frame and hang out the other side of your bumper when done. my rear ones will be almost 9" long. 6" will be used to bolt directly to the frame and the other 3 will hang out past the bumper. By doing this if you ever have to get pulled out you will be pulled from the frame not bumper which is usually held on by a hand full of small diameter bolts.

Here's what I build for the rear:

This was done out of a old forklift extension I had laying around and a 30 year old stick welder. Check out http://www.jeep-cj.com/forums/f49/rear-towing-bumper-info-9082/ for how I did it. I have 6 Grade 8 bolts to inside the frame 1/4" plate with captured nuts. Also there is 2 small grade 8's (1 on each end) with body bushing. I can take my bumper loose in 10 Min or less, but it would take a whole lot to pull it off! I think Post 19 is where I really start going with it. I did need to customize the skid plate as this bumper was "taller" than stock on by a couple of inches. It was not bad at all though... Check out that linked thread, there are a TON of pics of what i did etc.

As for the front, I just customized the one I had for use with my winch, and a shorter width.

Damnitutk I like that front bumper, did you build a rear bumper too? I kinda like my front bumper but the back one I go back and forth on, the spare tire is still mounted on the body and I'm wanting to put it on the bumper to take some stress off the body..

Hey guys this maybe another dumb question but why does it seem that everybody's front bumper just cover the grill and not the entire front of the jeep, every grill gaurd/ bumper that I ever built went the whole way, they were also always for dodge pickups??

Where did you get the D rings you have on the rear bumper ??

I got them from a local Hardware / construction supplier: Blue Collar

Go to google and type: Weld on D Rings

They'll pop right up. Find size and load capacity you desire.

Damnitutk I like that front bumper, did you build a rear bumper too? I kinda like my front bumper but the back one I go back and forth on, the spare tire is still mounted on the body and I'm wanting to put it on the bumper to take some stress off the body..

My bumper for the rear was just a tow bumper. I have mounted a high rack that is solid (non moving) to the rear to carry ice chests, tents etc. That rack has a open section under the carrying section between the frame of it to mount a 33" tire up to.

I'm not sure the exact reason everyone does it, I did it for 2 reasons.

1- I like the idea that the first thing that will hit a tall rock i slowly pull up to, and line up correctly, will be my tire. Again, if lined up correctly

2- My front bumper was a little twisted and dented on the outer sections. I also needed to fab a upper section for my winch, which meant adding weight to the front, along with the Warn M8000 winch I was adding, and a 1/4" steel plate to tie everything together. I liked the idea of taking some fat off somewhere

Thats a rear bumper i did, really simple and doesn't bolt on to that stupid thin piece of c-chanel thats used from the factory. D-ring tabs run through the tubing and bolted directly to the frame. Body mounts and gas tank skid plate are both bolted directly onto it.
