hey guys, new to this forum and have questions on a 86 cj i picked up last weekend...got it running today ( amc360 ) and was playing around with it trying to make sure everything works...the tranny ( T-18 ) shifts fine but the Transfer Case ( Dana 20 ) shifter only moves 1-click forward and 1-click backward from the nuetral position....my understanding is it should move 2-clicks forward ( 4-h & 2h ).... is there a certain way to shift into 4-h...do i need to be rolling or stopped...also, whats the deal with the front locking hubs.....do i leave them locked or unlocked...do they need to be locked to get the Transfer Case into 4-h and 4-l..... just a little confused...on how it works....thanks in advance for any replies..... amcdv

Your front hubs don't have to be locked at all times, that just causes unneeded wear. Rolling it seems to help me when I'm shifting OUT of 4h but nothing else. But I do have a Dana 300 in mine...

Sent from Tapatalk on a small phone, forgive the misspelling.

Yeah Ziggy said it, usually rolling helps. Sounds like someone put a differnt engine and tranny in the jeep. 4H two shifts forward, 2H one shift forward, and 4L one shift back from neutral. I never lock my hubs until needed, usually if I'm on a dirt road I will lock them for a short distance just to keep everything free and lubed.

ok, i'll try a little roll and shift to 4-h.....so clear this up for me....do the hubs have to be locked to be in 4wd....or does 4wd work even with the hubs unlocked.....in other words...do i have to get out of the cj to lock the hubs everytime i want to be in 4wd......and for daily driving do i keep it in 2-h and unlock the hubs... thanks in advance again amcdv

yes, the hubs have to be locked to be in 4X4. you can still shift the Transfer Case but it will not engage the front wheels.

yes you must get out and lock in before shifting to 4X4 high or low. back in the olden times it was considdered a bad idea to run 4 low with the hubs unlocked as it put major torque on one end of the Transfer Case . Today people run twin stick s on the TC all the time with no apparent consequences. Just another urban legend I guess??:D

If you are not in 4x4 there is no reason for the hubs to be locked your pushing the gears around for no reason. More wear on axle and less fuel efficient.

this is not in any way a "shift on the fly" system. The trick is to lock the hubs when you jump off the pavement and unlock them when jumping back on.

As IO said the old gear t/c are not ment to be shifted while on the move.
On the roll here meens 1-2 mph, or just shifting while letting the clutch
slip in and out a bit.
It's fine to drive on the trails with the hubs locked in in 2wd. that way if you need 4wd you just need to shift the t/c to 4wd.

thanks guys...i'll try to find 4h again today.....on another note, i dont want to be a PITA, i just need to know "HOW" things are supposed to work...i got a really good deal on this CJ, but the PO said he did alot of modifications on it...and this being my 1st CJ, i need to know what is and isnt stock..please bear with me as i'm sure i'm gonna post some really basic questions.... here is another one... i was told the rear is a Dana 44 with 4-10 gears and a tru-trac locker.....i was able to turn the wheel 1 full turn and see the driveshaft turn 4 complete turns...so i figure the 4-10 is correct, but can the Dana 44 be verified by sight..heres a few pics

An AMC 360, a T-18 and a Dana 20 in an '86 CJ7 . Since the entire drivetrain has been swapped in it is hard to say what Dana 20 you have. Some Dana 20 's had a U shift pattern.
If the shift mechanism looks like this you have a U shift pattern

Since your engine is a 360 and must have come out of a full size jeep I assume the TCase is also out of a FSJ. I bet you do have a U shift pattern.
