Dana 44?

Yes by appearances.

Yep, it's a Dana 44 .

Probably came from either a 72-75 CJ or a 72-73 Commando.

Since you have a GM Turbo 400 /Dana 20 combo that was available in the Commandos, That's likely where the rear axle came from. This axle is a bolt in swap for a 76+CJ. Most of these axles came stock with either 3.73s or 4.27s. Neither gear ratio was available in a 78 CJ, so I would check to make sure the front and rear gear ratios match before using 4wd

Thanks for the information. I will definitely check the front ratio before I drive it in four wheel drive.
I looked closer at the Transfer Case and I may be wrong about the Dana 20 , it may be a Dana 30 . I took a couple of pictures of it and it does have a tag on the back side. I need to clean it off enough to be able to read it. I did post a picture of the Transfer Case in another post.
Do you know of a good resource to decode the tag?

I saw your other post about Transfer Case . It's definitely a Dana 20 . I don't know a good source for the Transfer Case tags. Dana/Spicer called it the "BOM" (build of materials) number, but I could only find listings for axles, not transfer cases. A call to Dana and they may have record of it, but I don't know.

I wouldn't worry too much about it. There wasn't much variation in the Jeep D20s other than different shifters.
