- '79 Jeep CJ7 Renegade with 304ci V8, TH400 auto, Quadratrac T-case, Stock 20 and 30 rears with no mods yet, not sure of the gear ratio.. 4" Softride Superlift, w/widetrac shock towers and 35x12.50x15 BFG Mud-Terrains
'76 CJ5, 232 ci, T-150 3-speed, D20 T-case, Corp. 20 rear w/full float axles and lockout hubs and Detroit auto locker, D30 front w/lockout hubs, gear ratio is unknown..
So I'm cruzin' my local CL listings for some Jeep parts the other day, and I come across a listing for a CJ7 hard top w/hard doors, a hood, grill, tank and a couple other misc. parts for 250 bucks.. Now, I didn't need the top, doors or grill, but as some of you may remember, my hood lost a battle with high winds and an oncoming semi earlier this year and folded over the top of my windshield while driving 60 down the highway... anyhoo, I need the hood, and the rest seemed like a reasonable price for a hard top and doors, so I emailed him and offered AMC 150 for everything and that I could be there on Sunday, (today) to pick it all up...
He responds with "sold" and his phone and address..
So now, this in itself is a pretty good deal, but this is not the "deal of the century"... we arrive and I start inspecting the items, and there's a sunroof I hadn't seen in his pics that is being held in with silicon, one hinge is missing and the metal on the hatch is gone but it's repairable, doors are rough, but complete, and the hood has the same crease mine has, but has been mostly repaired... as I'm pointing these flaws out and how I mostly wanted the hood to be in good shape, he says, "well, what would you offer me, I want it gone and hate to see you waste a trip".. I say I'd give him 50 bucks for everthing, he says, and you guys will load it? I say, well of coarse!
Not bad, you say? Well this, my friends, still is not the "deal of the century"... He had also mentioned in passing, he had a dis-assembled CJ5 he had lost interest in, in the garage.. well I said i could use a couple parts like a clutch rod for my CJ5 , but he was really not too interested in selling any parts.. I'm looking around and everything is there, it's a CJ5 304ci, manual tranny, Dana 20 or 300 Transfer Case , a fairly new 4" lift kit with new shackles, sway bar disconnects, the frame is really nice and the rest is spread out all over the garage... He asks me what I'd offer him for it all, well the tub is shot along with the windshield frame, and I tell him that I'd have to just scap those.. he says, well that's what's going to happen to it if i didn't want it, in which I replied that that would be a shame... sooo I'd give him 250 for it with the wheels and tires, (it has the cool turbine wheels and about half tread 33s on it) and he says he wants to keep those.. "how about I keep the wheels and tires, and you can have everything, including the CJ7 stuff, for 200 bucks".... ya, 200 bucks...
So, basically, I went there to spend AMC 150 bucks on some stuff I really didn't need, and for another 50 bucks, I got a whole CJ5 !!!
That, my friends, is the deal of the century!
