So I worked a couple of hours on the dash today...I used a propane torch to get the diamond plate removed from orginal dash, then a putty knife to remove the rest of the guey stuff, I then took an awesome wheel sander and went over the whole thing then a hand sander with fine sandpaper to finish her off. I have it primered now and will go buy paint tomorrow my only concern is well some of the cracks "scratches" there are...What do you guys think Here are some pictures. :D

Don't worry, I'm sure all those swirls will buff right out...:D

Seriously though, if you want it to look slick, you can use a primer/surfacer when you start to repaint. It goes on thicker than normal primer, but allows you to take a sanding block and smooth it down and cover up all the scratches. Too bad you have already primed though, but I think you can rough up your current primer a bit and shoot the surfacer primer over it, if you don't want to remove what you have already done.

I doesn't look like you took it all the way down to metal. I think you need to strip it all the way down then spray it with a metal etching primer before you paint it That is the only way you are going to get all that out. You have gone this far do it right our you will be kicking your self.

Love the responses....Looks like I will redo it tomorrow with the primer/surfacer or the metal etching one kind of sounds like there both the same will check it out tomorrow if I have the time....Sucks:( i knew I did something wrong and I hate doing things twice when they can be done right the first time. Lesson will be learned though :D.....So take a look at this if you want to I used paint to kind of point out what I though most of the holes were. let me know yours thoughts.

Thanks guys
:chug:

Sorry it's so small I can't read any of it. And about the primer surfacer that Les said those are so deep that it will end up being to thick and cause you problems down the road. If you don't want to strip it down put some 80grit on a sander and sand it smooth then use the highbuild primer that Les said. But when it gets thick it will shrink and crack over time. I'm trying to help you get it so it will last a long time shortcuts with painting will come back and bite you in the @$$.

I think thats what I'm going to do is sand it down again and put some of that primer on there. Thanks man and I'll try and make that picture bigger.

Get some wax and grease remover and clean it before you prime. It looks like you had some oil on it when you first primed it, causing the cracks.

Lol, it's pretty clean I went over it with a torch and putty knife removing the gue...Not sure where oil would have some from if that was it. but will try the grease remover not sure how good at waxing I am but I know my wife loves it ;) jk jk I might give it a try gotta find this paint and primer I think I am going to paint it black cause I don't want to try and match my yellow on my jeep I really wanted to but ehh idk.

Thanks dude :chug:

Filling / changing the radio cutout will take some time.

Degreaser is fine but just a good wash with thinner will work too.

The primer sanded will fill the swirls, that's what its meant to do.

I've glued Naugahyde on with good luck.

I've gone to polished aluminum. Scuffs just make it look like battle scars. . :D

Burning off glue and oils will leave a residue. Sanding will smear the residue around, but won't remove it. Thinner will leave a residue that has to be cleaned off. Wax and grease remover won't leave a residue. Neither will brake cleaner.

Well hopefully I will have no more battle scars after tomorrow today I worked on re sanding the whole thing back down to metal and buying some metal etching primer plus some more brake cleaner to get it nice and clean. But this is going to be my last attempt....We are talking about a 37 year old dash i'm thinking a couple of battle scars might blend in lol :chug:

Cool! Good advice I will clean it up with some brake cleaner tomorrow I am going to buy that and some metal etching primer I'm trying all attempts here.

Thanks guys :chug:

If you do all that it should come out fine. When spraying the primer don't rush it put one on let it flash then put the next one on.

I've been using denatured alcohol to degrease just before priming. Evaporates fast, but all results have been good (and lasting).

I'm probably going to buy two cans of it...Spray a couple of layers then go across it with some find sandpaper and then put a couple of more coats on it.

Do you or anyone else know how hard it is to match yellow paint or do y'all think black will look good? :notworthy:

Thanks :chug:

Forgot about that there denatured or isopropyl alkehol.

I think I am going to put the dash in are cnc mill and mill out that radio hole on the left of the dash to make it fit a custom radio before I do all the primer and paint.

If you have something you can take off that is yellow just take it to a auto paint store and they can match it for you.

Wonder if they will put it in a spray can too...lol jk

Will do!!! I'll post more pix soon. :chug:

Wanted to give an update...I will post pics soon but I am going to have to repaint it maybe sand it a little more or use Bondo on it. I was using an electric buffer and buffer a couple of spots of paint right out ehhhh :(....but will eventually get it right.

Here we go so I am finally done, I have not put it back on the jeep yet because I want to buy a new wiring harness first, but after a long time of debating on what to do and trying to make things better but just messing them more up when things were already good I am finally leaving it alone. The spot you see close to where the speedometer goes is my latest mess up I sprayed way to close left runs tried to clean up with my shirt and smeared, so I had no paint thinner just sanded it down and repainted.

Here are some pictures the stuff I used were

Metal etching self primer
Black lacquer paint--oh and I was pronouncing the Lack queer which cracked up the customer service lady at home depot.
1000 grit sand paper and the help of a very wise guy from this forums

I appreciate all the help and advice it would have been done all wrong without it. :chug:
