This morning I got in the CJ and went to start it. As always, I turned the key to the start position to allow the gas to find it's way forward as the jeep has sat for 4 or 5 days. When I turned the ignition off to pump the pedal a couple times - surprise!!!! the starter was still running. I ended up having to pull the positive battery cable to stop it.

I have never had any problems in the past, and haven't altered anything. Any advice where to start? Ignition, solenoid, starter, ect????

Thanks in advance to everyone.

Flashback! About 35 years ago I had a Jeep pickup. One day when I was in a lumber store something shorted out in the starting system. Since the pickup was in gear, it drove itself right into the pickup parked in front of me. I was told at the time that this was not uncommon in Jeeps.

I believe that that pickup had some kind of internal solenoid in the starter. I think that I solved the problem with an external solenoid but can't recall for sure. (I've owned a lot of rigs in the last 35 years.)

Note to self: Install battery kill switch in cab.
