I just purchased a 1976 CJ7 , it originally had a AMC 304 with quadtrac. From the research I have done some PO along the way has installed an AMC 360 with a build code of either 1968 or 1977 and a delco distributor from a 1970-1974 AMC Hornet marked 1112179 2F 5. From my research the early 70s AMC Hornets did not have an ignition model involved in the electrical system. They had the solenoid, voltage regulator, resistor, coil & distributor with a single wire going to it. I would like to know what upgrades are available for this ignition system, namely if the TeamRush upgrade can be performed on this system. I appreciate any help I can get. Thanks

Welcome to the forum Formula 40PC, You have a few options here, like a Davis Unified Ignition, A conventional hei, or a Motorcraft with the Team Rush Upgrade. There have been numerous write-ups on all of these. I am not aware of any upgrades for your existing ignition system.

..or a TeamRush with HEI...

I am thinking about simple for now and just doing the motorcraft distributor with the larger ford cap, cap adapter, rotor and ecore coil. My biggest question would probably be about what I should install for an ignition module since there currently is not one on the jeep and the old AMC Hornet system did not have one. Should I go cheap and simple or would it be money well spent to go with an MSD while I am buying something.
If the system doesnt have an ignition coil and ran will it just run considerably better with one?

A Motorcraft is a good ignition, you could go with a MSD setup to go with that. I would advise going with a more expensive icm as they can be a problem when they go bad.

..or a TeamRush with HEI...

This is the best choice overall. ;)
Simple to do with over the counter parts.

I am new to this DIY ignition stuff so I have questions.

If I use the MSD 6AL do i still need a "ignition module" like the AC Delco GM HEI? or does the MSD 6AL have the ignition module included?

I'm still run'n the stock module with my MSD setup.
Been very happy with the MSD, as not only does the engine run better. It's lowered my tail pipe emissions.

Now you smart guys are confusing me!!!
Can I run with just a stock Delco ignition module and no MSD box?
Is there a better stock ignition module to run with this new motorcraft dist./ecore/ford dist. cap?
Can I run with just a MSD Box and no ignition module?
If you are running with ignition module & MSD box then how is it wired?
How does my jeep run in its current configuration with no ignition module or MSD box?

Have you read this? It Should answer your questions.

Formula40PC, I am pretty sure you do have a breaker point ignition that does not require an icm.

I have read every article I could find on the TeamRush upgrade but for a novice to vehicle ignition/electrical it tend to overload the brain and then I confuse myself.
Do the MSD 6A and AC Delco GM HEI Module do the same job?
If so then is the MSD 6A worth the extra money while I am buying 1 or the other?
I have no ignition module currently with the current Delco distributor system so I will be buying all new from the ignition switch to the plugs.

Also, the salvage yards in my area want $40+ for the Ford ecore coil, is the MSD Blaster SS Coil-#8207 as good as the ford ecore? It is only $49 on summitracing so I can just order with the rest of the parts.

Pull your dizzy cap off, and see if you have points or not.
If your not sure what you have-Post a couple of pictures.
Unless a PO changed your dizzy out, you have points type as OEM.

Sorry, should have clarified. I do have points, it looks like the original distributor. It will be removed and replaced with the motorcraft.

First I hope you find the parts you need and get everything working again. For future reference, a picture of what your talking about will help everybody understand what you have. What one person calls a widget, another calls it a thing a ma bob. Just helps everybody get on the same page right from the beginning. Good luck.

The team rush upgrade is an interesting way to go, but I'm a big believer in the GM HEI. I paid the big bucks for a DUI unit. It's a one wire, a full 12 volt set up, nice and clean, most important of all for me, it's easy to install (use your old Dist. gear).

I have contemplated the HEI rather then the TeamRush. I read a few things negative about DUI and thats why I was leaning toward the TeamRush but I am still willing to look at either. Honestly the HEI isnt all that much more expensive in the grand scheme of things. The TeamRush will cost me around $200ish and new DUI unit is only $300 and essentially a drop in without me having to do all the wiring.
I am completely open for suggestions either way.
Thanks

What are the negatives you've read about? I did have some adventures with the Dist hitting the power steering pump. I got around that by jumping 1 notch. Mr Bass got around the problem by using a longer belt on the power steering pump. A nice neat easy solution.

What drew me to the DUI (and others) was their simplicity, no wires and boxes sitting around. Also, I would have needed to buy everything including the Distributer (interesting, now I know that my Motorcraft would have been fine) so the Team Rush solution would have been a little more expensive for me.

So i decided to go with the DUI HEI setup, I ordered one and it will be here friday.
I am going with Belden plug wires and autolite platinum plugs(if I can find them) everyone seems to be out. If anyone has a better suggestion for either plugs or plug wires please give me your 2 cents.

I have attached a drawing of my current wiring for anyones viewing.
My question is what can I get rid of in the engine compartment?
Voltage Regulator??
Resistor??
Coil??

Thanks for any help
