My current dist. gear looks a little worn. I would assume it is mated well with the cam gear after all these year, this dist. looks to have been in the engine for a looonnggg while, its not the original though, says reman. under the dist. base.

You need to reuse that gear on what ever dissy you end up using or you will be replacing the cam gear. That is where I'm at right now.

Good news gentlemen!! After some not so minor modifications and changes I have the new DUI HEI installed and the jeep started better then before.

Problem......The engine idles good, seems good when given throttle but when you put it in gear and give it gas it runs rough and when you let off the gas it dies. I am going to post this on another appropriate forum but just wanted to include this after getting it started.

Thanks a ton for all the advice and help!!!

What did you set the ign timing at?

I have been researching the distributor upgrade for the 76 CJ5 with a AMC 304 engine. It appears the 76 is a unique beast.

What options do I have for replacing the distributor?

Mike

I would think that the HEI or Motorcraft would be your best options. The HEI has its own Ignition control module where the Motorcraft has an external one requiring more wiring. As I recall, you have the Prestolite ignition which was only used for a couple of years.
