It seems Ive built a little reputation around town always having Cjs around. A few weeks back some older gentelmen stopped by and asked me for some advice. Someone told them to stop by my place since I always have Jeeps apart around my place. :D I gave them a couple books and some info scribbled out on a notepad on differences between Yjs/Tjs/Cjs , price ranges and all around stuff.

Fast forward to last week and one of the gents , Edgar , stops by again. Edgar bought a '85 CJ7 for $2000 that promptly spit out the head gasket. They got a new head gasket and replaced it but the Cj will not start. He tells me they only removed the dizzy and replaced the head gasket while reusing the old head. He said it backfires and wouldnt start. I told him to bring it up to TDC and redo the wires. He called me later in the week and asked if Id come down and look at it.

I took a quick look at it yesterday and all the plug wires were right. Edgar didnt have any real tools so there wasnt much I could do. I probably shouldve asked but they did get the head swapped so I assumed.... Anyhow I believe the dizzy is 1 tooth off from where I see the number 1 cylinder is set at. Im going to bring my toolbox over and check it out. Is there anything special about having the head off that I should be looking into?

Sorry about the long post. Id just like to help the guy out and get some good Jeep Karma going again. :D

I would suspect that the distributor is 180 degrees out. I'm sure you know that it has to be TDC on the compression stroke.

Good luck

Make it run like a brand new Jeep, Pete!

Mine first. :D

I suppose it could be 180 off. It didnt backfire or anything , it just kept turning. I wasnt there when he set it to TDC. I igure I'll just start from the begining.

Lots of ways to find the compression stroke, this is the way I do it.

Thats perfect. I was going to be turning the engine over from underneath at the crank pulley. That will give Edgar a nice visual sign instead of me trying to explain what to listen for. ;)

I would also bring a torque wrench and re-check/confirm headbolt torque.
This will also give you a chance to ck the pushrods and rockers etc.
The backfire is classic 1 tooth off deal. NO-FIRE is way off.
Good luck and keep us posted--

Will do. This is leaning me more to 180 degrees out. Unfortunately for Edgar I have a Cj as well. Im waiting on my new power steering box and then Im off to vacation. I'll update this but itll be late next week.
