What is the best use if any?

There were PTO winch's back in the day used on CJ's and then there was the Farm CJ with remote PTO gear on the rear for driving different attachments.

It used to be common (into the late 80s)for fence companies to use cj's with post hole augers on the back.

Can't beat a PTO winch, don't have to worry about frying your battery & can have a huge reduction depending on what gear your using plus very high line retrieval speeds, as long as your engines running you can winch until you run out of fuel, to bad jeeps still don't come with PTO's

It's a sickle bar mower, lay it down-engage PTO and drive, cuts what evers in the way.:D

Yes it is sweet! was part of a group of Jeeps that went to auction on Ebay a year or so ago but never met the 30K reserve as I recall.

I have not run a pto on any of my jeeps for years. I used to run pto winches and still have a pto box and a pto winch inthe garage but just prefer electric winches now.
at one time the amount of pto tools for a jeep was boogleing

I just saw a photo of a CJ5 a fellow bought that has a big welder on the right side of the cab --no pass. seat--that runs off the pto via 3 hd belts. The CJ shows 5k miles but over 6k hours on the engine. One of the most sought after add on (at least in my area) is a rear 3 point lift hitch. With that set up, you can add a big mower, and ride around you field mowing in your CJ, Rear trenchers were another jpopular kpiece. they usually had dual rear wheels to carry all that weight.

The 3 point hitch for the Jeep was a CAT1 (category 1) hitch which is fairly small. The big 4WD tractors use a CAT4 hitch for really big equipment. Still a CAT1 can be very useful.

So, are pto's still available?

if you have a 71 or earlier Jeep with the D18 Transfer Case in it, Yes there are places you can still get the PTO, it will be a rebuilt one but yes they are available. I have one and a PTO winch in my garage, the winch needs a rebuild but there are guys who do that.
