I am in the process of doing a drum to disc conversion with this info AMC 20 disk brakes
I have cut the backing down to size, but the bracket that I bought doesn't seem to fit snug against the old drum brake backing. Is this the incorrect bracket? or do I need to grind it to a larger size to fit? It seems to fit nicely on the medial portion of the axle, but about 2 inches from where it meets with the backing it seems to flare out about 1/2 inch not allowing the bracket to fit into the pocket.
thanks in advance, any info will be greatly appreciated.

I saw in the first post of that thread that the guy did some angled grinding to fit flush with the flange, but it looks like your gap would be too far for what he did to be effective.

Where did you get the brackets from?

the seller does not know a lot about very much, does he? Good luck with this one. hope you can find calipers and disks that will work,.:chug:

Looks to me that it's supposed to be bolted to the end of the housing where the drum backing plate is, the calipers should tell exactly where it goes though

Thanks, I haven't gotten the calipers yet, so once I get farther along I will repost some pics...thanks again.

I think I have found what the problem is... I have a 1985 CJ7 . I could be wrong but I was under the impression that the 86 was the only year where the Dana 44 was used instead of the AMC20 . This is a view from the back side, can someone confirm to me that this is a Dana 44 vs AMC20 ?
thanks again

I can confirm that is not an AMC20 . The cover is almost perfectly round. Here is my Dana 44

The 44 is 10 3/8" wide where the 60 is 12 1/8" wide.

This is silly question but question but are you referring to the size of the pumpkin or the gear inside. If where do I measure from. Do I remove the 10 bolts and measure the inside?

That is the pumpkin width.

You can also measure the axle tube dia -

Dana 44 are 2.75" or 3"
D60 are 3.125" and some say 3.25"
Dana 44 ring gear dia = 8.5"
D60 ring gear dia = 9.75"

As posted in the other thread you have a Dana 44 . :)

thank you!!!! for purposes of when I order parts, can i assume that this came out of a cj, jeep, scout or otherwise? it has the 5x5.5 lug pattern.

There is a number stamped in the axle tube, usually close to the pumpkin,
6 numbers followed by a - and than another number. Enter them in this link and it will tell you the year and what it came from. The Expert Search Form

There should also be a 44 or a 60 cast into the pumkin.

FiNorman, sorry had to do some work but looks like CJ got you the info.

Mr. Old Dog and Mr. Troy you are true gentleman... thank you and I will keep you up on my progress.

Update... I'm at work and I'm talking to my wife on the phone trying to get her to help me with the numbers. She responds by telling me "I can't find it.... but if Jeeps were beer you realize you would be in a basement at the Knights of Columbus Hall saying 'Hi my name is Frank, and I'm an addict".
I will check those numbers when I get home...thanks again.

Hi, my name is Troy and I am a Jeepaholic.

Glad to help out where I can. I am learning a lot too so I like to give a little back when I can.

You are right, they are a bit addictive.

good news and bad news... I found the numbers... it's definitely a Dana 44 , but when I put in the code for the axle ID 603162 4 it doesn't return a finding. Very frustrating since it's pretty easy to see and it doesn't even come close to any of the numbers from Dana listings. I tried several combinations but no luck.

The date stamp isn't readable to me but it looks like 2 26 8A3.

The other number is on the webbing between the pumpkin and the shaft housing. You can see the 44 in the bottom left hand and above it c-35284. I'm not sure what this means.

I have tried a couple of methods to see the number better, including rubbing it with chalk and rubbing it with paper and pencil, sort of what they do at the Vietnam Vet Memorial. None seemed to bring it out more.

Does anyone have any idea on the measurements for a widetrack Dana 44 to help identify it?
