Hi again guys. My Son's 80' CJ5 Iron Duke is dying when stopping. No pwr brakes.

Before and after carb rebuild today it still does it. Idles kind of funny but I suspect it's the pick up in the ignition (replacing tomorrow). When it dies when stopping it starts right back up and runs fine. We can throttle it hard while stopped and it settles back down fine. Only dies while stopping at intersections. Float level is good. Fuel filter is new.

Any ideas? Totally stumped.

Might be an idle speed control solenoid not doing its job, if there is one for that engine.

CK the carb float setting.
Also look hard for vacuum leaks.

Wouldn't hurt to chg the fuel filter also.
Make sure the f'filter return line(smaller 1/4")is at the 12 0'clock position.

There isnt a fuel filter return line or any return. Just a line to the new filter, then to pump. The line that ran to the canister is blocked right by the radiator.

Is there any way to find out what the float setting is supposed to be? We rebuilt the carb and the damn directions even showed how to set the float but never gave a height.

Think you just found a possible reason for the stall'n-Vapor lock because of no return line to keep the fuel cool and moving.

Come to think of it, it doesnt die at stops when cold. Well :dung:. So where is the a return line supposed to come into? All there is, is an inline filter, then pump. Is there a port on the pump?

They are worth 10X the cost!
I bought my MR-252 FSM when I bought my CJ7 in 1985. :D
Only cost $25.00 then:eek:

The cost for that FSM, will be returned in knowledge.
Maybe Dad could get it for him-:D

Nixing the $99 Manual. Tried getting him to buy it but he just cant afford it.

We replaced the fuel pump since we had one already. Replaced the filter already. Float has been set slightly higher and then lower, no change, so we put it back.

There are only 2 lines we found running from the tank. We are thinking of a tank removal though, gas looks kinda murky.

Replaced the pick up since everything else is new to fix an intermittent miss. Still stalling at stop. Vac advance is new too and hooked to correct port on carb.

She'll run like a scalded dog now but still stumbles and dies on stops. Now that I've lasered the gas line at around 79 degrees while warm, Im ruling out vapor lock.

Gonna spray everything again to make absolutely certain that there isnt a vac leak.

FRUSTRATING.

You'll recover that $99 in knowledge gained & time saved-
A Jeep CJ is not for someone on such a tight budget that they can't even buy a OEM, FSM
Start'n to sound like a vacuum leak.
Ck ALL the manifold bolts.
Confirm ign timing.
Take a vacuum reading. It SB steady at 18+ inhg. Anything much less(16 inhg)-You may have issues
