I'd like to strip all unnecessary :dung: off my '77 AMC 258 i6 / 4.2l CJ5 , starting with the emmission system. Can i get any input from anyone having done this?

Before you get started on this project I can tell you it will run better with it than it will with out.
the next thing is are you a one or two barrel carb? and how much "emissions Junk" do you still have??:D

THANKS, I am really concerned about performance. I was hoping stripping emmissions off would help. To the best of my knowledge all remains on it. Since it is 35yrs old, I figure it will need replacing but I'd rather save the money and rip it all out. My 1bbl carb needs to be updated to a 2bbl but do i need a 2bbl intake manifold to do it right?
This is a nice CJ but is running real bad.

for themost part you should have an air pump, check valve and air injection manifold on the exhaust manifold, a thermostatic air cleaner (TAC) and an EGR valve.
take some pictures of the drivers side of the motor from the top front to back and lets see what you still have.
