Hey everyone,
Did a search to see if this forum had anything of a "how to" on how to get the dipstick tube out of the block. A couple of threads said to drop the oil pan and pull it from underneath. So, I did some research and found that this was the best method.
Mine was broken off at the block. I bought a replacent of eBay, which a few other forums advised against due to reinstallation problems, but mine went in no problem.
So, to get the old one out, I acquired a 1/4"x6" lag screw with a 3/8" head from Home Depot, I think it was in the deck building area. I bought a long one so i could reach the bolt from above.
I coated the bolt with Vaseline to trap any possible metal shards that might come from the screw cutting into the tube.
Tightened the bolt in about an inch. Crawled underneath and gave the underside of the head of the bolt a few taps with a long flat blalde screw driver and a hammer. Tube has been in since the '70's and slid out no problem.
Lag bolt screwed into old dipstick tube:

I had to remove the header to get the new tube in properly. Maybe a good time to check spark plugs while you are in that vicinity
Reinstall the new tube, may require a few taps with a soft mallet to get into the block.
New tube installed into block:

Reinstall header.
Put tube into holder that attaches to the head cover.
Fire up your big 401 V8.....drink cold beer (titrate to effect)
Hope this helps!!!!
