1983 CJ7 automatic trans with 304 engine
I just bought a refinished 1983 CJ7 . It has an automatic Transmission with a AMC 304 . I drove it yesterday with no issues but this morning on my way to work it shut off three times before leaving the neighborhood. The only difference from this morning to yesterday was that I was not wearing my seat belt. Once I put my seat belt on it drove fine. Is there some sort of safety device on the 83's that involve the seat belt?

No, but you never know what the PO did. There are quite a few reasons why a CJ will shut off during flight. The first thing to figure out is weather it is an electrical or fuel related problem. I would consider checking fuel pump pressure or volume for starters. Sometimes jiggling wires around while the engine is running will kill it also.

Might better wear some rubber gloves when buckling up. Rod

I know it sounds dumb but do you have gas in the tank?

Unfortunately I speak from experience. :)

Sounds like you might have an incompatible air to fuel ratio in the gas tank. I'd try replacing some of that air with fuel and try again.

........ yes, it sounds like a joke, but CJ gas gauges are notorious for giving false fuel levels. I know mine is. In the year I've been driving mine I've run out of fuel more than I have with any other vehicle I've ever owned.

First-FILL the gas tank-If it dies after that.
Use just the ign key in the key switch, and see if it happens again.

Let's get our priorities straight...if the CJ is shutting off during flight, the first thing to check is cabin pressure, followed closely by altitude...and of course you must be prepared to jump ship with a chute when all else fails :D

This is a nice and helpful welcome for the new guy.

Sorry if this sounded snarky, but I was serious. In a jeep I was new to, given the inconsistency of jeep fuel gauges, the very first thing I'd do is fill it up and look to see if there was an additive like the old "Dry Gas" to help remove any water that might have built up in the tank.

Agree 110%-
Fill the gas tank and also check the condition and POSITION of the fuel filter too.

I think all of the above is good advice except for Techlight; maybe is has spent too much time alone out in the California desert. The only other issue I can think of is the fuel pump. They will die like that then restart when they first go bad. (Assumes you still have the mechanical pump at the side of the block) If you haven’t changed it and the pump looks like it has been there for a while it couldn’t hurt as the rubber diaphragm in them is subject to wear. Also remember that the two outlet fuel filter needs to be installed with the extra outlet turned up and attached to the return fuel line. :chug:
