sometimes the starter does not engage to turn the motor, but if i put it in gear and hit the starter it turns the engine and starts while moving, any help or suggestions are greatly appreciated.
Sounds like a worn starter gear or possibly a washer has worn down and missing on the shaft. You need to pull the starter and just inspect it. You could have a tooth chipped but I doubt that.
Its probably just signs of wear.

What happens when you try to start the jeep? Do you hear the starter spin but not turn the engine? If so it's probably the bendix device that pulls the starter gear out to mesh with the flywheel. It's part of the starter so OldC7 is on the right track. Just remove the starter. It's only 2 bolts and a cable. An auto parts store can test it. Unfortunately it's intermittent. It may test fine when it's out of your jeep.
