Hey yall
first off i have an 83 CJ7 with a AMC 258 i6 / 4.2l . I recently converted it to power steering and that works great. The new problem im having is it cranks and idles fine but when i'm driving and start coming to a stop (push in the clutch) or go to make a turn it dies. I just added a bottle of lucas fuel injector cleaner before this started. So could this mean that my filter needs to be replaced or my fuel pump is going out? THANKS FOR ANY ADVICE

Being low on gas can be a problem, a CJ manual fuel pump puts out about 4 p.s.i. Providing it is flowing correctly, like no clogs in the old, crusty fuel tank, and no rotted or kinked fuel lines. The fuel filter has to have the return line mounted on top also. I don't think that the Lucas can clog up a fuel filter, which should be replaced from time to time anyway.

Do you have power brakes?

Just a thought: I know you mentioned pushing in the clutch. But what about applying the brakes? Is there any corelation between doing that and the engine dying? If so, there might be a vacuum leak in power brake booster. That can cause an engine to die out.

It might be a little "out there", just thought I'd throw that idea in the mix.

good luck
brian

Might be your idle is to low try turning it up some. I had the same problem and thats what i did.

Could be one of several things - dies when making turns sounds like a float issue - not enough fuel in the bowel and it starves when you turn. Could also be loose bolts on the base of the carb and you are getting a vacuum leak when you turn or stop after the engine is warm.

Have you hooked up a vacuum gauge and checked to see what it is at idle cold/warm?

I think your on the right track with the fuel fiter. Since you did fuel treatment, it will loosen some :dung: up in the tank and lines and it will end up in your filter.
