Ever since I was a little wee one, I wanted me a jeep CJ7 and 53 years later I found her. In 1978 I was 14, but when I was 8 years old raising, on average, 120 chickens for both meat birds and peddling eggs, this is when jeeps became a dream. I tried hard, but all the hustling wasn't enough to buy one. My uncle had a J20 pickup and he'd let me drive every time he'd come over to get me for fishing or visiting. Seems jeeps were everywhere. During the winter I would hitch rides to town; we lived about 7 miles in the country, and I'd shovel driveways and walkways all day. Years flew by working and raising the family, and like many folks, money went to the grown up things in life; providing for the needs of your family and thinking about all the wants you'd love to provide on top, but those wants outweighed our own. 1986 rolled around and I had returned state side for my next duty location at Homestead AFB. That was the year of the Comanche. I had a friend at the local jeep dealer and he put together a great deal on one. I had that pickup for 16 years and I shoulda kept her. Well, fast forward to old man status, and about a week ago, my wife and I are on our daily walk. There was a blue CJ7 always in a garage of a home we passed for the last almost three years. I got tired of looking at it and torturing myself wondering, WHY doesn't the owner ever drive it? Why is it just sitting there? Then, it was outside in the drive one morning, and the next morning, and all the other mornings of the last year or so... driving me nuts to the point that my wife would say, before we got too close, "stop it... it's not yours". "Leave it rest!". About two weeks ago I see the owner drive past us as we're walking. On the window, I could see it plain as day: FOR SALE! My heart sank. Yep, my not so secret mistress of the past couple years was going to be scompped up by someone else. As we get closer to his home, here he comes. He drives her into his driveway. I ask, Hey, whats the deal? Well, he said. I just posted it on Facebook marketplace and I've already fielded over AMC 150 calls! I've had people kicking the tires and trying to lowball me, but I've got someone coming over who wants it.... Good God! She's lost! Onwards we walk back home... The next day, I'm working in the backyard and my wife starts yelling for me to come up front. What do mine eyes deceive me with? What is going on? There is my dream jeep sitting in our drive. The wife bought it for me with her secret account she had been saving up, and used some of it so she wouldn't have to hear me going on and on about losing the opportunity to buy it
. Happened that she drive over immediately after we got home and told the guy she wanted to buy it for me as a surprise. The other person never showed up, and he apparently called the wife and they seditiously colluded in the operation. I drive her nuts, and now I drive her in a cool CJ7 with a AMC 258 i6 / 4.2l i6 (4 speed) with (granny low) options! Got the workhorse (tank strong) Warner T-18 Transmission . I'm reading that it wasn't too common to get a 78 CJ7 this way?
The owner and his pop removed the body and blasted then powder coated the frame. It's a beautiful thing they did. I've got one wonderful (and beautiful) woman, and a beautiful blue mistress
. Cheers everyone and thanks for the welcome. Be blessed and be well.
