Can anyone tell me if there is 2 type of exhaust manifold for a AMC 304 ? I have a 76 CJ5 . I bought used manifolds that bolted on great. The problem is the one on the driver side. There is no space between the clutch lever bar and were the exhaust pipe needs to 90 back. When you lookup exhaust manifold for this year/engine there is no different part number choices for a 3 speed or auto. Seems to me that the connection for the pipe should be closer to the middle.

Thanks:confused:

Yep, there are two different driver's side manifolds. One dumps out at the rear and can cause issues with a manual tranny and the other dumps about 4" further forward and clears everything. This is the one you need if you have a clearance issue:

I was told that the '79-earlier V8's used the type pictured while the '80-newer used the rear dump style. I have been unable to confirm this on CJ's and it makes no sense as the CJ always had a pass. side front diff. so changes in the exhaust routing would not be needed. I have confirmed that '79-older FSJ's with a pass. side diff used the pictured manifold while the '80-up versions used the one you described. That makes sense as in '80 the FSJ's went to a driver's side front diff. which probably required a different exhaust routing. I suspect that all of the CJ V8's used the manifold pictured and that you may have been sold later model FSJ manifolds. Passenger sides are all pretty much the same and there is no need to get another one of those.

x2. Some of the FSJ's used the different manifolds. Best bet is to use the CJ style V8 manifolds

Thanks Incommado, I bought mine I jsut asked for manifolds for a AMC 304 . Know I know what to look for. If anybody in Texas has one I'll buy it if the frieght to kill me.

The forward dump style, for lack of a better name, were used on any Jeep with an AMC V8 and passenger drop Transfer Case . The log style were only on FSJ's with a driver drop Transfer Case .
