...in a '65 CJ5 . Here's the backstory:
I picked this jeep up a couple weeks ago with the usual, "ran fine when parked" story. The carb was lying in the passenger seat and there was no fuel pump; but the seller provided me with a new fuel pump (mechanical, no vacuum). After doing the usual tune-up (changing fluids, replacing filters, etc.) I put the carb back on (will rebuild later if necessary) and installed the fuel pump. I cleaned out the tank as best as I could and hooked up the lines.
The engine starts and runs for a few seconds with starting fluid, but the pump wasn't pumping. I must've taken the pump off and on 10 times; doing everything from looking to see if the cam lobe was worn to taking the pump apart to look for debris that could be blocking something. I even hooked up a vacuum gauge to the tank side of the pump to determine that the pump wasn't pulling any vacuum, and therefore wouldn't suck any fuel from the tank.
It wasn't until I posted a pic of the pump (minus the glass bowl) that I noticed that the direction of flow is backward! It's been a while since I messed with a fuel system this old, but the flow is normally the other way from the factory, right? In this picture, it would be looking down at the top of the pump from the driver's side of the engine as it's mounted; the tank on the right side of the pump and the carb. line on the left:
Also, shouldn't the check valves with the springs (on the right side of the bowl in the pic) be on the tank side of the pump? I'm going to disassemble the pump tonight and spin the top half of the pump 180 degrees to get the ports on the correct side, but now I'm wondering if I should swap sides with the valves as well?
