I have a CJ3a that has an F134 Hurricane engine. The serial number on the engine (above the water pump) is 1T57638. I can't find any info decoding this number. I think it might be a truck engine maybe???.

I've looked all over the internet and cannot find any info regarding the '1T' designation as most engine numbers are 4Jxxxx.

Anyone got some insights?

1T = Factory rebuilt engine.

I went through the same thing several years ago.

I had the same 1T serial # on my 54 3b. It was a factory rebuilt engine so the likely conclusion was the factory reassigned a new serial #.

Yet another great reason to be a member of this forum. YEARS of experience gained and shared!

This won't be too expensive Dear! That's what I keep saying. Over and over again.

Posi = :notworthy:

That's awesome! Thanks for clearing that up. That's one of those things I go all OCD on...got to know what that number means! I've been chasing that for a while.

Where did you find that info? Is there any way to figure out when the rebuild took place?

The engine runs well and doesn't smoke, so I don't expect to have to do much to it....other than getting it to fit under the CJ3a hood! :D

Then there's the other tings I want to chase down, such as when was it originally made. I think it's an early F134 Hurricane as it doesn't have a PCV system, just a breather on top of the valve case cover with a filter and a tube off the driver's side of the engine that creates a negative draft. It's painted blue - maybe another clue to being rebuilt? Who knows...

Thanks again!

OK, I was going off memory last night and thought my F-134 serial # started with 1T. However, my F-134 was rebuilt and the 4J was removed and replace with the prefix BF along with the original serial #.

This is what I have in my notes

All CJ F-134 engines prior to 1967 had the prefix 4J plus serial #

Military M38a1 would have a prefix of MD then serial #

First digit = market
M = military
E = export
D = domestic

Second digit = year
R = 1969
S = 1970
T = 1971

Third digit = engine
F = F4-134

Fourth thru sixth digit = Day of year built, plus change if any

Seventh thru eighth digit = undersize rods-mains/oversize bores
(only present if applicable to other than standard)

Ninth digit = replacement value using factory engine
S = service engine
R = short block

Tenth and eleventh = compression ratio
60 = 6.0 to 1
63 = 6.3 to 1
67 = 6.7 to 1
71 = 7.1 to 1

After 1950 the pickup prefixes were changed from 4J to 1P or 1T plus serial number.

What you have is a F-134 from a pickup. According to your serial # it looks to be 1954

Sorry for the confusion, hope this new info helps.

Are you sure it's a F134 Hurricane ? 3a's did not come with the F head engine being a low hood design, The 3B was the first Jeep to use the F134 Hurricane overhead intake valve engine and prior Jeep's used the L head engine that is a flat head design.

Oh, yes, it is definitely an F134 Hurricane . The PO had done what Sasquach said and use a bump-out for the tall Carter carb. Their solution however, was to cut a hole in the hood and invert an oil pan from some other engine lying around (pic 1). "That's some mighty fine engineering there, Lou.":rolleyes:

What I am doing to solve that issue is that I learned that a Holley 1904 carb from a '61 Falcon will fit the block and is a short enough profile to fit under the 3a hood line. Runs like a champ!. That will leave me about an inch and a half for the air intake which I still got to get to (pic 2). Of course this engine causes issues such as manufacturing the throttle linkage and so forth, but that's part of the fun!:D

I've been on a 3a forum for a while dealing with the rest of the jeep as it's all 3a. The engine is the odd man out here. So I thought I'd haunt this forum for info regarding the F134 Hurricane .

A oil pan on the hood now thats a new one.

I guess it would be more functional than leaving it open......
