fan ate my freakin' radiator

Well guys I took my kiddos out on my '76 CJ5 and after some rough mud I heard the fan grinding on the radiator. The soldered tabs in the top had broken and the radiator is SHOT. It has about 4 big holes in it now. It looks like a big shiny copper crop circle.

So now I need another radiator. I need a good source for one, but what I'm hoping someone can tell me is what other model of vehicle radiators can fit in my cj.

I'm running a AMC 258 i6 / 4.2l , thanks for the help guys.

I think the interchange calls for 76-79, but most aftermarkets' fit from 73-86. There is no other donor vehicle other than the Cjs themselves, or at least not a bolt in without any fab work.

You also need to think about why the fan hit the radiator. Maybe you hit some water. The fan can then pull itself forward.
Do you have a flex fan. Those are okay on street cars but not so good off road.

If there's anyone here that has used a non jeep radiator even with fabbing please let me know what you did. Out here in the boonies I have Limited resources.

That makes perfect sense. I was in some deep stuff. The mount solder was broken on both brackets on the top but it sure didn't seem that the fan would get that close anyway.

The fan is an aftermarket type, stainless fins I think.

Well, I guess I might as well get electric while I'm at it.

Oh btw, now that my hackles are easing up, I'm beginning to think a ranger rad. and shroud might work.

this is not a big help and also still a Jeep but a FSJ radiator is real close. I think the overflow goes in the other direction.
I have a chain that is welded to the skid plate and has a bolt welded on the other end. this goes through one of the holes in the bell housing. I found, the hard way , that the engine has enough play in the mounts to move forward with an impact or quick stop. this results in the radiator hitting the fan.

Was the rad from rock auto used?

Amen! I have rock auto magnets all over my work cabinet. They had a huge amount of brake parts up for my cj recently. I found all my flex lines, shocks and calipers at about half price. The shipping is what hurts but it still beats most counters.

If you do remember to shut it off in the deep stuff, or it will pull into the rad. too.
